Set up:
Place pairs of cones throughout the pitch. These pairs will be known as "gates". Have players get into pairs who will be their partner for the drill. Each pair needs 1 soccer ball.Drill: Players work in pairs of two with one ball, passing and moving. If players are taking too many touches in between passes, limit touches or seconds on the ball.
Coaching Points:
– Part of the foot & weight of pass.
– Scanning the field to see cones & teammate and move to open space based on surroundings.
– Never turn your back to the ball, always move where you can see your partner and the ball.

Through Ball Diamond Drill (15min)
Set up: 4 Cones in shape of diamond & one soccer ball
Drill: A player starts with the ball at one end and passes into a midfielder and continues their run towards the other side. The midfielder with the ball makes a square pass to his team mate across, the team mate then lays the ball into the path of the running player who passes/dribbles the ball to the other side. The midfielders switch places and the pattern repeats from the other side.Rotate midfielders after a few minutes.
Coaching points: Passes must be accurate. Remember to weight the pass correctly if you are playing the through ball to the running player, timing and weight of pass are particularly important and could be the difference between and offside call or the ball rolling through to the goalkeeper.

Midfield Keep Away Drill (20min)
Set up: Playing area is divided in zones as shown. Each zone has a 3v1 organised. Need 1 soccer ball
Drill: - The players in each zone must maintain possession against the Defender.
- End zones may use 1 or 2-touch play.
- Central zone 1-touch is encouraged.
-Players in Central grid are not permitted to ‘turn’ = must play the way they are facing – this is to encourage quick 1-touch play and teammates to offer good supporting angles.
- Emphasis is on the central three players moving to create passing options and angles.
- Players must attempt 5 passes in each zone before moving the ball to the next zone.
- Any errors = change Defender with player responsible for error

Creating Mid-Field Space (20min)
Set Up: Create a playing area with two small goals back-to-back in the middle.
Drill: Two teams play against each other. Both teams can score in either of the two back-to-back goals. Play starts when the ball is played in. If the goalkeeper gains possession, or the ball leaves the area, a new ball is served in. The goalkeeper puts any balls they gather into the net behind them. When a goal is scored, another ball is immediately served in.
Coaching Points:
- Look for quick switches of play
- Be aware of the position of the goalkeeper – which goal is unguarded and easiest to attack?
- How can you make the most of the quick restarts?
- When you are out of possession, can you press quickly to win the ball back?
