Description

Main objectives of today's session is to help players beat pressure by working on 1v1 moves for various situations. We end with an attacking game that is predominantly numbers-up to give players opportunity to work on technique.

Arrival Activity: Scrimmage (5 mins)

Organization: Make teams as even as possible and let them scrimmage as they show up. As soon as you have 7 or 8 players, jump into activation activity.

Instructions: Players have a hard time arriving on time due to heavy traffic and construction nearby. As players show up, put them on teams and have them play a pick-up game for the first 5 minutes, you'll need this field set up for later so having it available in the beginning is useful.

Coaching Points/Questions: None. I try to let the players manage the game to the best of their abilities and let this be their time. I praise their excellent in-game actions and greet the players that are coming late.

Regressions/Progressions:

Introduction Activity (10 mins)

Organization:

Instructions:

Each player has a ball.

Set up 9 triangles in the space, 3 blue, 3 red, 3 yellow.

First iteration of this game: Dribble through as many triangles as possible in one minute.

Second iteration of this game: Dribble through as many (any combination of two colors as possible). Third color is now worth negative points.

Third iteration: Stop/start in as many triangles as possible. (Use only two colors depending on success of the players in second iteration.)

Fourth iteration: Perform a body feient in each of the triangles.

Fifth iteration: Perform Pullbacks in the triangles.

Sixth iteration: Perform a V in the triangles, using the far cone as the simulated defender.

Seventh iteration: Each move has a colored triangle, give them various combinations.

Coaching Points/Questions:

How should we approach the triangles, with a big touch or small touch?

How do we sell these moves to real defenders? Emphasis on leaning/arms moving/ quickness of move.

What part of the foot do we perform these moves with?

Regressions/Progressions:

Regression: If players are struggling, repeat first few rounds several times until the kids get grasp of dribbling techniques. Not all of the moves have to be performed if players are struggling, this is simply an exhaustive list for teams that are move advanced or deep into their season.

Progression: Double up on moves or make more complicated patterns.

Main Activity (15 mins)

Organization:

Instructions:

Each player has a ball.

There are 9 triangles, 3 red, 3 blue, 3 yellow.

There is one defender attempting to reset the players score to 0. They reset their score by putting a foot on top of the ball and gaining complete control of it. They get 1 point each time they do this.

Players get 1 point for each triangle they dribble into. They have to perform some type of ball mastery move to get 1 point.

Only 1 player per triangle. If a second player enters, they first player has to leave.

Coaching Points/Questions:

Players, which move could I perform if the defender is to my right? Left? Behind? In front?

When should we be taking small touches or big touches?

Where should our eyes be?

Regressions/Progressions:

Regression: Don't reset point totals.

Regression: Allow easy dribbling techniques through triangles as points.

Progression: Add second defender.

Progression: Remove triangles.

Progression: Players have to perform combinations of moves in each triangle.

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization:

Teams are divided in half, lines organized besides the goals.

Balls and coach are off to side. Yellow team starts with ball at feet. Player at the front of the line decides what the round will be.

Instructions:

Attacking team (Yellow team) gets to choose from a 1v1, 2v1, 3v2, or 4v3 attack.

Attacking team gets number of points each round equal to the number of defenders they scored on.

If defending team wins the ball, they can attack the goal and get points equal to the number of attackers that round. Example: A 3v2 that the defenders score on, they would get 3 points.

What I am looking for in this drill is the ability to take on defenders in a numbers up situation. If the defenders win the ball, they are immediately under pressure and must act quickly to try and score before getting swarmed.

Coaching Points/Questions:

Should we dribble at speed or slowly?

What kind of touch should we take when approaching defender?

Can I perform a 1v1 move to get past the defender?

Regressions/Progressions:

Regression: Make numbers more uneven, 3v1, 4v2.

Regression: Defenders can have additional person join once they reach midfield and say the name of the next player in the defensive line. ( This incentivizes the defensive players to quickly run to midfield, call for support, and then pressure the ball. Without telling the defensive players to pressure the ball high up, we are rewarding them for it.

Regression: Make numbers even (2v2, 3v3, 4v4). Still let players decide number in each round.

Progression: Only enable an additional player to join if attacker performs a pullback and passes it back. (Play would start 2v2 and attacking team would have to get to midfield before performing pullback and passing back to the extra player.)

Progression: Give additional points for 1v1 moves.

Match (15 mins)

Organization:

Teams divided evenly.

Regular scrimmage rules.

Coaching Points/Questions:

Can we perform some of the 1v1 moves we worked on today to create space for us and our team?

Where should our eyes be when dribbling?

When approaching a defender, should I use big touches or small touches?

Because we only provide 2 Pugg goals to the coaches, get creative with the second field. Create a 'gate' that the players have to dribble or pass through for a goal.
