Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Striking the ball for a solid pass, receive side on and with the back foot to play forward, turn and play towards goal
Technical Tactical
Looking to make a "killer pass", used to progress play throughout the pitch. The idea is to make as direct play forward as possible when available
Technical Psychological
Attacking mindset, move if given the opportunity to get into scoring positions, that should be the top priority

Penetration (10 mins)

  • ORGANISATION:
  • Set up a goal on the halfway line, if the defenders get the ball, they can try to score here
  • Mark out 3 sections about 10m deep each from halfspace - halfspace
  • Use flat cones in the middle to avoid interference with the ball

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Attacking Team plays the ball "across the river" (through defenders' space)
  • If the blue team can pass between the defenders an extra point (for directness)
  • If the yellow win the ball, then they get a point and an extra one for making a forward pass (outside the river) and another if they can score

COACHING POINTS:

  • Q: If you have the ball, what is the best thing you can do with it in a game? (A: Score)
  • If given the opportunity we should drive as directly as possible.

  • Bonus ideas: dribble across to the other side or shooting directly

TECHNICAL:

  • Strong pass, locked ankle and inside of foot
  • Receive side on with back foot to drive forward.
  • defenders should stay close together to try and prevent being split

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • remove/add a defender
  • remove/add target players to receive a pass
  • remove/add starting player
  • make the width only the central zone
  • Provide another defender for the yellows to pressure the passer but also receive if yellows win the ball

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Receiving side on with back foot to play forward if possible, communicating what the player on the ball can do, scanning to understanding the context of your play, protecting and keeping the ball
Technical Tactical
Looking to support play and move into attacking positions, used to progress play throughout the pitch, looking to get into positions and understand when to play direct or supportive
Technical Psychological
Attacking mindset, help support the attack to get the opportunity to get into scoring positions

Support (10 mins)

ORGANISATION:

  • Same grid as before,

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Blue team is still trying to get the ball to the other side of the river to score a goal (1 point per goal) however they must use the supporting player before scoring
  • If the supportive player can play directly through to the other side, then they get an extra point
  • If the yellow win the ball, then they get a point and an extra one for making a forward pass (outside the river) and another if they can score

COACHING POINTS:

  • We won't always be able to go directly forward, in this case we should be looking for support. This support can help change the angle or move the pressure. I.e. if the defenders are only looking to make the intercept to the other side, we can use a pivot to help control possession.
  • In a double 6s (CDMs) setup, we will often use these players to help control and move the possession.
  • We still want to make forward progression if possible, so scanning is incredibly important
  • Q: Other than scanning, how else could this 2nd attacker know when they should or shouldn't turn (A: Communication, Bounce or Turn)

  • Bonus ideas: play a direct pass then support from the other side.

TECHNICAL

  • If not pressured, the support player should be looking to play directly through and continue forward progress. If they are pressured, can they turn safely (keeping the ball on to the opposite side of an attacker) and continue forward. If they are being pressured and cannot turn, they should get low and square keep square to safely play the ball back to the attackers they got it from
  • When playing a pass, make sure that you communicate to "bounce" or "turn"
  • Be ready to receive the ball back by taking a few steps back after making the pass, keeping on the balls of your feet and being ready to move the ball

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • remove/add a defender
  • remove/add target players to receive a pass
  • remove/add starting player
  • make the width only the central zone
  • allow yellow to pressure in the starting zone
