To defend, split the field in zones.
1, 2 and 3 on the length of the field.
A, B, C, D on the width of the field.
When defending, we want to cover 2/3 of the field at the most.

The width:
A, B, C and D.
Always cover 3/4 of the field as a team.
Ex: Ball is on zone A.
Back 4 occupy A, B and C.
Rest of the team align appropriately.
Notice how weak side center back covers pretty much the center of the field. (Always)

The length:
A, B, C and D.
Always cover 2/3 of the field as a team (at most) while defending in Zone 1, all but the center forward would cover Zone 1.
Ex: Ball is on zone A1.
Back 4 occupy A, B and C in zone 1. 5 Mids occupy the same area ABC 1 while CF is strong side in Zone 2.

We focus on connections rather than individuals.
Covering most of the field, ready to intercept passes and shift as a block to reduce space for the ball carrier.
We want to stay in front of the ball as long as possible to defend moving forward. We do not want to chase, rather stay compact, move as a unit and force the opponent to make the mistake we would take advantage of.

Goalkeeper has the ball and play right.
We, as a block, shift right, reducing space on the strong side.
3 options then:
They play forward (pass or dribble)
They play sideway (pass or dribble)
They play back (pass or dribble)
We would ignore the weak side player stretching the field. Focusing on the ball carrier, and the space available.
Challenge the play forward, anticipate the play sideway, discipline and remain compact on the play back.
As the ball travels and remains in opponent's possession, we reduce the space available to the ball carrier, forcing the turnover.
We constantly change responsibility from pressure the cover. All players are involved in the defensive work.
