Short Corner Routine (20 mins)

Short corner kick routine

Setup and instructions:

  • One attacking player (Red) sets the ball up in the corner.
  • Member of the attacking team (player 1) will set up 5 yards from the corner taker (player 1 should NOT be a vertical threat)
  • Step one: short pass to player 1 and get into position to receive the pass back.
  • Step two: receive the pass back to the original corner taker. Player 1 will run into space. Player 2 will make a diagonal near-post run. Player 7 will make themselves available as an outlet option. Player 6 will be on the goalkeeper's toes. Players 3, 4, and 5 will wait to time their runs.
  • Step 3: Players 3 and 4 will make crossing runs with player 3 attacking the far post and player 4 attacking the near post. Player 5 will overlap and cut toward the area between the penalty spot and the 6-yd box.
  • Step 4: with players 3 and 4 vacating space with their runs, player 5 should be able to get goalside-ball side on their defender. The original corner taker should have an open lane to deliver a cross to player 5 who should have an attempt on goal.
  • Progression: Use player 7 as an outlet if the defender closes in on the original corner taker. Attacking runners (players 3, 4, and 5) will have to adjust the timing of runs in the box to account for outlet pass.

Focus: Tactical corner kicks, passing touch and accuracy, crossing, making runs off the ball, and using decoy runs to develop passing lanes.

Attacking Free Kick (20 mins)

Attacking free-kick routine: left-central channel and slightly too far from the goal for a direct shot on target.

Setup and instruction:

  • Player 1 places the ball about 30-40 yards out
  • Defenders (blue) will hold a line on the top of the box in an attempt to catch runners offside.
  • Players 4 and 5 will flank both sides of the defender's wall. Player 3 is an option on the left wing. Players 6, 7, and 8 will position themselves on the opposite central channel lined up with the deepest playing defender.
  • From here, Player 1 can: 1) pass to Player 3 who can cross the ball into runners, 2) directly cross the ball towards the far post runners, or 3) pass the ball to Player 2 (this option is the animation.)
  • If Player 1 passes to Player 2, Players 6 and 7 will break toward the goal while Player 8 flairs back toward the ball to create space. The opposing team's wall should break at this point as they attack the ball.
  • The players flanking the wall (4 and 5) will make quick cuts toward the goal.
  • At this point, player 8 should deliver a ball over the top of the defenders and attempt to assist Player 4 or 5.
Focus: Set piece options, running off the ball, creating space with decoys, passing and crossing decision-making, and attempts on goal.

Defending corner kicks (20 mins)

Defending corner kicks and transitioning to counterattack. Defending set pieces will always be man-to-man.

Setup and instruction:

  • 8v8 plus a goalkeeper.
  • The red team will try and score on the main goal.
  • The blue team will defend the corner kick and attempt to pass the ball into one of the mini-goals.

Coaching points and focus: good communication, organization, positioning, and awareness.

  • Defenders should set up quickly and watch the ball to make sure the red team does not sneak in a quick corner.
  • Assign marking responsibilities: everybody should man-mark a player and track the runners through the set-piece practice.
  • Place a defender on near and far posts. This protects the goalkeeper if they go out for the cross.
  • Be aggressive and stay focused. Attack the ball in the air, don't wait for the ball to come to you. Focus on staying on your mark, even if the ball isn't played to them. It is easy to lose track of your assignment during corner kicks due to the high number of players and general chaos in a small space.

Defending free kicks (20 mins)

Defending free kicks and transitioning to counterattack. 8v8 with a goalkeeper.

Setup and instructions:

  • 8v8 with a goalkeeper
  • Set pieces will start on either wing, within the half, but too far to have a direct shot on goal.
  • The attacking team (Red) will try to score from the set piece on the main goal.
  • The defending team (Blue) will try to defend the set piece and transition to pass the ball into one of the mini-goals with 3 or fewer passes. The speed of the counterattack should be a focus.
  • Switch set piece location every 5 attempts. Defenders should hold an offside line around the 18-yard box depending on the location of the free kick.
Focus and coaching points: good communication, organization, positioning, and awareness.

  • Defenders should set up quickly and stay aware and focused on the ball to make sure the red team does not attempt a quick free kick.
  • Assign marking responsibilities: everybody should man-mark a player and track the runners through the play.
  • Be aggressive and stay focused. Attack the ball in the air, don't wait for the ball to come to you. Focus on staying on your mark, even if the ball isn't played to them. It is easy to lose track of your assignment during set pieces.
