Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Goalkeeping Shot Stopping Session - 30 Minutes
Description
This is a 30 minute shot stopping session designed for goalkeepers of all ages, and it can easily be adapted for players of different ages and abilities. It starts with a 10 minute warm-up activity and progresses on to a 20 minute technical activity. This could then easily help goalkeepers join in to a SSG with the rest of the team.

Key Factors
- Use the correct Scoop and W technique to catch the first save that is volleyed towards you, and ensure the ball is held.
- Ensure you use quick footwork to shuffle back towards the middle of the goal. Don't cross over your feet. This makes it easier to move quicker, and helps to push off on the dive.
- Make the correct decision on your diving save. If you don't think you can hold the ball, push it away to safety or if it's a good strike, just attempt to get a hand on it.
Organisation
- This is a 20 minute shot stopping practice that uses 2 to 3 goalkeepers, and an outfield player if possible (not necessarily important). 1 goalkeeper will be working and 1 will be serving on a volley. If you have no outfield player, have the coach or another goalkeeper taking the shot.
- The working goalkeeper starts on their goal line, and shuffles forward to save a volley from the coach. This can either be a catch using the scoop technique, the w technique, or a mix of both. After making this catch, the goalkeeper should drop the ball, and shuffle back towards the middle of their goal ready to attempt a save from a shot taker. The saves should include a:
- Low Diving Save
- Medium Height Diving Save
- High Diving Save
- Direct Striker at the Goalkeeper.
