Catching



Aim


To improve the Gk's catching ability, using speed of movement and their set position to ensure they are in the best possible position to start and end these movements

Warm Up (15 mins)

Warm-up



Aim


To get everyone moving and thinking about the session ahead



Instructions


Working in pairs the gk's will take turns in feeding and stopping the ball.


The ball will be served at mid-level starting with a soft throw to waist height, the working GK is to make a positive movement to catch the ball with both hands and secure it on the ground. The gk's will then change position


**Left and right sides to be worked**



Progression


The GK's will now work on the ground level with the same drill



Coaching points (To be given by the serving GK)

    • The set position must be correct with the weight and hands forward of the waist
    • The GK is diving forward with his arms outstretched and looking to make the catch and not parry away
    • The GK is watching the ball all the way into his hands

Feet (20 mins)

Feet



Aim


To try and give the GK more confidence using both feet to make passes



Instructions


  • The GK will start in between the 2 cones, on command, he will move to 1 side and set for the passback which he is to control and return to the coach


  • The GK will then move front, behind, in-front of the cones and set again for another service


  • The ball is to be returned with the right foot when he is on the right-hand side and vice-versa



Progression


  • 1st time passes


  • Mid dives


  • Ground dives

  • The GK is ready to receive the ball and is on the balls of his feet

  • The GK is looking where he is passing to

  • Hands are out in front

Pass Out (20 mins)

Pass out



Aim


To develop the GK's passing confidence and aim when using both feet



Instructions


  • The GK will be standing behind the goal in between a line of 2 different coloured cones


  • The coach will shout a colour and the GK is to move through the cones (forward & back) and then collect a ball at the side of the post and serve it over to the hurdle on the opposite side of the goal

** Over/sidearm throw


** Kick along the ground


** Clip



Progression


Once the initial action is complete the GK will quickly move back into the goal to receive the shot from C(p)



Coaching points


  • The GK is balanced and is looking out


  • The pass / throw is done at pace but sensible !


  • The movement into the goal is at speed and he sets correctly and waits for the shot on goal

Quick shot (20 mins)

Quick shot


Aim


To have the GK making quick movements so he is able to deal with an early shot on goal



Instructions


  • The GK starts on his line and facing out & centre (1)


  • On command, the GK will move forward to be in line with the ball and in between the red & black cones (2)


  • On command, the GK will collect a red cone and place it on top of the black cone (3)


  • As soon as he has done this the C can start his movement to shoot towards the near post, the GK must move at speed to try and get into the correct position (3)

Progression


 A 2nd shot can be then taken towards the far post, it is up to the GK to get to his feet and deal with this ball



Coaching points


  • The GK is moving and speed and trying to get early eyes on the ball


  • The GK is diving forwards with arms out in front of him and making every attempt to secure the ball


  • Fastest way to his feet???
