Skill Intro (20 mins) (20 mins)

Core Skill - First Touch

Specific Aspect - Receiving the ball in tight areas

Key Principle - Individual Skill

Session Objective: To improve the players ability to receive the ball in tight areas and maintain possession.

Skill Intro (20 to 25 mins):

3 grids, 20 player squad max (2 x 6 & 1 x 8 - 2 side bumpers)

Essentially a 2v2. Objective is to move the ball from A to B and then back again. Players need to take a First Touch before they do something with the ball.

* 3 minute changes *Both teams can attack

Step down: passive defending.

Step up: Limit touches, reduce pitch size.

Players Tasks:

Keep the field as big as you can when in possession.

First touch forward if possible

Position your body to see where the ball is and your next target

Scan the field in anticipation of receiving the ball

Skill Training (20mins) (25 mins)

Core Skill - First Touch

Specific Aspect - Receiving the ball in tight areas

Key Principle - Individual Skill

Session Objective: To improve the players ability to receive the ball in tight areas and maintain possession.

Skill Training (20 to 25 mins):

2 grids (2 groups of 10)

5v5, objective is to run the ball through any of the 3 goals. Want to see players taking a first touch before doing something with the ball but do not want to discourage one touch play. When goal is scored or ball is out of play, play restarts from alternate end with a new ball. Once the balls run out, all players to collect one & re-set the field. The idea of 3 goals is to promote width when in BP, and also hidden learning when in BPO to shut the ball down asap.

After 10 minutes, game to turn into 5 v 4 and team with 4 has a GK. Attack team (5) can only score goals in the centre (Yellow goals), team with 4 can still score by running balls through any goal. After 15 minutes, teams rotate so everbody gets the chance to attack with an extra field player.

Player Tasks:

Keep the field as big as you can when in possession.

First touch forward if possible

Position your body to see where the ball is and your next target

Scan the field in anticipation of receiving the ball

Coaches Cues:

Can your first touch be forward?

Are you able to see where the ball is coming from and where you want to go with it?

Can you make the pitch any bigger?

Does the ball need to stop with your first touch?

Be patient, if you can't go forward where else can you go?

Step Up's: Must play the way you are facing - limit touches - all players must touch before it can be a goal.

Step down: passive / shadow defending

Hidden learning: if attack team looses the ball, need to quickly transition into a BPO position (make the field small) to try and win back possession / stop a goal being scored as quick as possible.

Skill Game (25mins) (25 mins)

Core Skill - First Touch

Specific Aspect - Receiving the ball in tight areas

Key Principle - Individual Skill

Session Objective: To improve the players ability to receive the ball in tight areas and maintain possession.

Skill Game (25 mins):

9 v 9 (1 player starts off for each team, rotate every 2 & half minutes).

Let the kids play and see if they can execute the session objective.

Highlight positive execution of the Specific Aspect, have the players demostrate for the rest of the group.

Coach on the run, reinforce player tasks from Skill Training to individuals during natural breaks in the game. LET THE KIDS PLAY!

End of the session during brief warm down:

Ask the players what we worked on specifically (aspect, not just core skill). Make sure they had fun and understand how and when they can use it during games.

Self evaluate:

Did all the players participate?

Where they are able to execute the Specific aspect?

Did the players need to make decisions during the session (PDE's)?

What parts of the session can I improve?
