Description

Session Description

This U12 session is designed to develop players’ ability to counter attack quickly and effectively after regaining possession. The practices provide opportunities for players to recognise transition moments, play forward early, and support the attack at speed.

The session begins with a transition-based technical practice before progressing into opposed counter-attacking scenarios that challenge players’ decision-making and movement. The session concludes with a small-sided game where players are encouraged to exploit counter-attacking opportunities in realistic match situations.

Coaching interventions will focus on the first pass forward, speed of support, positive attacking runs, and decision-making in transition moments. Appropriate challenges and support will be provided to meet the developmental needs of U12 players

Warm Up — Win & Break Reaction Game (10 mins) 

Organisation

  • Area: 25x20

  • 3v3 possession in middle

  • Two mini goals on outside

  • Team in possession keeps ball

  • If defenders win it → immediately break to mini goal

Adaptation to the Practice

Progression:

  • Touch limit

  • Smaller space

  • Add second mini goal

Regression:

  • Increase area

  • Add neutral player

  • Free touches

  • First touch forward

  • Head up early

2. Main Drill — Regain to Target Counter (15 mins)

Organisation

  • Area: 35x25

  • 4 attackers vs 2 defenders in middle zone

  • If defenders win the ball → pass quickly to target player ahead

  • Team then breaks forward to finish

Adaptation to the Practice

Progression:

  • Limit touches before counter

  • Add recovering defender

  • Reduce space

Regression:

  • Add extra attacker

  • Bigger area

  • Passive defenders

3. Progression — Counter Attack Game Zones (20 mins)

Organisation

  • Area: 40x30 split into thirds

  • 4v4 game

  • When team wins ball in defensive third → must break quickly

  • Encourage forward runs

Adaptation to the Practice

Progression:

  • Time limit to score

  • Touch limits

  • Reduce space

Regression:

  • Add neutral

  • Remove zones

  • Bigger pitch

4. Small-Sided Game — Fast Break Bonus (25–30 mins)

Organisation

  • Area: 40x30

  • 5v5 or 6v6

  • Normal rules

Condition

Goal within 8 seconds of regain = double
