Description

Session Objective: Teaching all players how to use change of direction lateral movement to win 1v1 against a defender

Game Moment: In Possession

Desired Behavior (5 W's):

What: Teaching players the technique of stepover and "Ronaldo chop" as skill moves to help them win 1v1 against a defender laterally

Who: All players

Where: Anywhere on the field

When: When the defender approaches the attacker to engage in a 1v1 situation while the attacker has the ball

Why: We want to teach our players the value of change of direction movement laterally to deceive the defender which will allow the attacker to exploit the space desired to continue possession with their dribble

Coaching Points:

* Focus on technique and the technical aspects of each skill move

* Stepover:

- Turn your body angled in the direction you are faking to go
- Bring dominant leg around front of the ball
- Touch in opposite direction, away from defender, with outside of foot
- Change Pace

* Ronaldo Chop:

- Dribble forward

- Leap over the ball

- Land on both feet

- Hit the ball with the inside of your dominant foot behind your weaker foot

Warm-up (5 mins)

Organization:

  • Non Game form
  • 15 by 15 yards
  • Two cones as gates 3 yards apart in the middle of the playing area on each side as shown
  • Focus team - Blue - defender
  • Opponent team - Red - attacker

Activity Objective:

  • Use evasive moves to avoid being tagged by the defender to reach the target area

Instructions:

  • Tag game - 1v1 with no ball. Attacker and defender each line up at the disc marker. Attacker claps hands together to trigger start of game. Attacker needs to reach either gate to win. Defender needs to tag the attacker with either hand to win. Attacker wins a point if successful.
  • Active duration - 90 seconds
  • Rest duration - 30 seconds
  • Sets - 2
  • Rules/Restricts/Constraints - All side outs are resets of play, defender wins by default
  • Rotations/Substitutions - Rotate to the other end when each interval is completed

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Teach the players how to avoid the defender using moves to move forward and exploit space.
  • When - Planned stoppage - after 1st set
  • How - Guided Q&A/Discovery - After the 1st set, ask the players what moves they used to evade the defenders and why that was effective

  • Focus team - Blue
  • Opponent team - Red

Activity Objective:

  • Active duration - 90 seconds
  • Rest duration - 30 seconds

  • How - Model/Demo - After the 2nd set, show the players what a good stepover looks like. Can use a player that you feel did it well. NOTE - if we do not progress past the stepover, stay with it. If by the third set we see good stepover, progress to Ronaldo chop. After the 4th set, show the players what a Ronaldo chop looks like. Use a player demo if able.
