Method:

The Aim of Active Dribbling is forthe players to improve their ball mastery, to be aware of other players, navigate and improve their pace and turning.

Introduction of Defenders willincrease the pace and energy and bring in a competitive aspect to the drill.

Start by giving each player a balland tell them to start to dribble around the square, keeping their eyes up andwatching for other players. Tell them to dribble at medium pace and when youshout “Press”, to dribble at full pace to the furthest away edge of the square.

  • Let this drill run for 3 mins and shout driveevery 30 seconds or so.
  • Then stop and tell them when you shout Tap’sthey have to stop the ball and do 10 toe tops.
  • Run the drill for a further 3 mins and alternatebetween “Press” and “Taps” Commands
  • Then stop the drill and tell them when you shout“Inside” to turn and change directions using the inside of their foot.
  • Run the drill for a further 3 mins and alternatebetween “Press”, “Taps” & “Inside” Commands
  • Then stop the drill and tell them when you shout“Outside” to turn and change directions using the Outside of their foot.
  • Run the drill for a further 3 mins and alternatebetween “Press”, “Taps”, “Inside” & “Outside” Commands
  • Take the ball away from one of the players andtell them they are now the defender and need to win the ball off the players, each time they win the ball turn the person who lost the ball into a defendertoo until everyone has lost the ball.

Coaching Points:

  • Make sure the players are dribbling with the topor outside of their foot, demonstrate this is how they increase pace andcontrol.
  • Pause the Game if players are losing control ofthe ball and show them short strides and keeping the ball in tight to theirbody.
