Session Objective: Maintain possession of the ball by providing vertical or diagonal passing options and giving immediate support to teammates under pressure in our middle third.
Game Moment: In Possession
Physical Load: Threshold (75%)
Identified Game Situation:
Current Behavior: Midfielders currently dribbling in the middle third taking up positional space amongst the other areas of the middle third. This is causing space to be minimized where the opponent pressures and wins the ball to counter towards our goal.
Desired Behavior (5 W's):
What: Teaching the midfielders the importance of not dribbling into space on pressure situations but instead, winning 1v1 to create space to allow the ball to move forward to our other midfielders, wingers, or forward.
Who: Primary - 10, 6, 8; Secondary - 7, 11, 9
Where: Anywhere in the middle third
When: When our midfielder with the ball is engages with pressure against our opponent in the middle third
Why: We want to teach the midfielders how to play faster in our middle third by using their teammates to create passing options to move the ball forward. We value that the ball moves forward faster by passing it versus dribbling to win 1v1 challenges to move forward. We also value the risk of not losing the ball on the dribble in the middle third where the opponent can quickly counter and put a lot of stress on our defensive line to delay their attack till support arrives.
What If's:
* Ball goes wide, 2v1 play (play forward)
* Ball goes wide, 2v1 play (support behind)
* Ball central, 1v1 play - find forward player to play forward
* Ball central, 1v2 play - find support player to play negative
Coaching Points:
* Provide vertical or horizontal passing options:
* Recognize the player on the ball is under pressure and has no immediate options:- Above the ball: move towards the ball to create a passing option
- Behind the ball: adjust position to create passing option
* Exploit the space in and around the opponent’s defensive block and create a positional advantage:- Avoid two players in a direct line.
- Move and provide a good supporting angle: receive facing forward to play forward when possible.
- Stay away from the ball when player on the ball has time and space to play forward.
* Triangulate: we position to provide the player on the ball with at least two forward (diagonal/vertical) passing options on different levels of height and width.
* Rotate: interchange position to create a dynamic advantage.
