Description

Session Objective: Maintain possession of the ball by providing vertical or diagonal passing options and giving immediate support to teammates under pressure in our middle third.

Game Moment: In Possession

Physical Load: Threshold (75%)

Identified Game Situation:

Current Behavior: Midfielders currently dribbling in the middle third taking up positional space amongst the other areas of the middle third. This is causing space to be minimized where the opponent pressures and wins the ball to counter towards our goal.

Desired Behavior (5 W's):

What: Teaching the midfielders the importance of not dribbling into space on pressure situations but instead, winning 1v1 to create space to allow the ball to move forward to our other midfielders, wingers, or forward.

Who: Primary - 10, 6, 8; Secondary - 7, 11, 9

Where: Anywhere in the middle third

When: When our midfielder with the ball is engages with pressure against our opponent in the middle third

Why: We want to teach the midfielders how to play faster in our middle third by using their teammates to create passing options to move the ball forward. We value that the ball moves forward faster by passing it versus dribbling to win 1v1 challenges to move forward. We also value the risk of not losing the ball on the dribble in the middle third where the opponent can quickly counter and put a lot of stress on our defensive line to delay their attack till support arrives.

What If's:

* Ball goes wide, 2v1 play (play forward)

* Ball goes wide, 2v1 play (support behind)

* Ball central, 1v1 play - find forward player to play forward

* Ball central, 1v2 play - find support player to play negative

Coaching Points:

* Provide vertical or horizontal passing options:

 * Recognize the player on the ball is under pressure and has no immediate options:

  - Above the ball: move towards the ball to create a passing option

  - Behind the ball: adjust position to create passing option

 * Exploit the space in and around the opponent’s defensive block and create a positional advantage:

  - Avoid two players in a direct line.

  - Move and provide a good supporting angle: receive facing forward to play forward when possible.

  - Stay away from the ball when player on the ball has time and space to play forward.

 * Triangulate: we position to provide the player on the ball with at least two forward (diagonal/vertical) passing options on different levels of height and width.

 * Rotate: interchange position to create a dynamic advantage.

Warm-Up (10 mins)

Organization:

  • Non game form
  • 5 by 5 yard space
  • Focus team - 4 attackers in blue
  • Opponent team - 1 defender in red

Activity Objective:

  • To provide passing options while the attacker is under pressure with the ball to maintain possession.

Instructions:

  • Active duration - 50 seconds
  • Rest duration - 10 seconds
  • Sets - 10
  • Rondo activity - 1 defender in the middle of 4 attacking players in a diamond or square pattern. Attacking players should move around within the grid where defender needs to stay inside the grid to defend. 5 consecutive passes to win 1 point for focus team, opponent gets 1 point for disrupting the focus team's passing game.
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - Defender must remain inside the grid, attackers must remain around the grid in the coned out area
  • Rotations/Substitutions - When defender wins the ball, attacker who lost the ball is the new defender

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Attackers are learning how to pass the ball quickly when pressure arrives.
  • When - During Active Play - encourage high intensity from the defender to create the required learning for the attackers to pass the ball quickly.
  • How - Direct Feedback/Explicit Guidance - attackers are to learn 2 technical points. Receiving on first touch to allow the next touch which is the pass to be accurate and to the next receiving player. We want the first touch to be away from pressure if receiving it. One touch passing - locking ankle, using instep to ensure ball remains on the ground with the correct weight and accuracy.

Function (25 mins)

Organization:

  • Modified game form
  • 20 by 20 yards
  • Mini goals on each end
  • Focus team - 4 attackers in blue and yellow
  • Opponent team - 2 defenders in red

Activity Objective:

  • To maintain possession of the ball in creating passing options and triangulate while opponent applies pressure on the ball.

Instructions3

  • Active duration - 2.5 minutes
  • Rest duration - 30 seconds
  • Sets - 8
  • 4v2 game. Focus team starts with the ball and attempts to make 3 consecutive passes before scoring at any of the mini goals. Opponent wins the ball and scores at the mini goal. Can progress to 5 consecutive passes if focus team does well in the first 3 sets.
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - all side outs are resets of play, consecutive passing requirement for focus team before scoring at a goal
  • Rotations/Substitutions - rotate new defenders after each set. Create two grids for 12 players, 3 grids for 18 players. Maximize touches on grids as this is a 75% load session.

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - attackers learn how to make quick decisions in passing the ball when the opponent applies pressure. Attackers are to move to open space, check in for pass (player cue), and continue to triangulate while opponent continues to pressure.
  • When - During Active Play - coach is to encourage play and intensity needs to be high both mentally and physically for all players.
  • How - Direct Feedback/Explicit Guidance - coach is to ensure first defenders are working hard and applying pressure to create the learning environment (orientation phase - OLI). Once defenders are coached well to execute their task, go to learning phase - OLI to coach attackers. Use the first 3 sets for orientation, last 5 sets for learning. For learning, direct attackers how to open hips, use back foot receive to turn quickly, and encourage one-touch passing once movement is at speed. Address intensity and demand speed of play in moving the ball quickly.

Phase (25 mins)

Organization:

  • Modified game form
  • 40 by 40 yard space
  • Two end zones on each end
  • Focus team - 7 in blue
  • Opponent team - 7 in red

Activity Objective:

  • Maintain possession of the ball while under opponent's pressure by using wide players for support where midfielders are triangulating passing options and moving behind or in front of ball.

Instructions:

  • Active duration - 4 minutes
  • Rest duration -1 minutes
  • Sets - 5
  • 5v5+2 game. Focus team to start with the ball and play into the field from outside the grid. Goal for either team is to possess the ball into the end zone.
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - First pass by focus team is UNOPPOSED to start each set. Three touch restriction for all players. Any side outs are resets of play back to focus team.
  • Rotations/Substitutions - rotate new boundary players after each set

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Our midfielders are now working together alongside the top line players to possess the ball while under pressure from the opponent. Midfielders are to move into space and provide support in front and behind the ball to triangulate passing options while the boundary players out wide provide further support to stretch the opponent to disorient.
  • When - Introduction - explain to all players the expectations of intensity based on the first two activities. Same concepts apply overall on moving quickly into space and intensity from the defenders to create the learning activity. Also explain in the intro why we are doing a 3 touch rule which is basically to enforce movement.
  • How - Direct Feedback/Explicit Guidance. During the introduction, explain the rules and coaching expectations.
