Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

- Specific Practice (Defending the final third)   Defend the middle, minimise box entries, stop crosses.

  • - RED team (coached team) set up into a back 4 + goalkeeper defensive unit. 
  • - BLUE team (managed team) set up with 2 central midfielders, 2 wide players and 1 striker. 
  • 2 x 4-minute blocks of play. Can defensive unit hold out under sustained pressure for the duration of these blocks?

- RED team are coached to use penalty area as a defensive line in order not drop too deep.

Specific practice

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Challenge - RED team is to defend the final third by protecting the middle, minimising box entries and defending the box. Blues challenge is to switch play and attack the final third. 

Conditions: Full width of the pitch and 1/3 of a full pitch lengthways. 

Target; RED team to defend the final third. 

 

  • for each block they do not concede a goal in the central big goal the RED team will gain 5 points. If reds can win possession and play the ball into the coach they receive a extra point for their team.
  • Target for blues is to score in the fixed goal (3 goals) or in the wide mini goals (1 goal). 

Key Points: 

- RED team out of possession (COACHED) 

  • Defend the middle, minimise box entries, stop crosses.
  • Concentration, communication, cohesion needed throughout

 BLUE team in possession: (MANAGED)

  • speed of ball
  • width and depth
  •  risk taking
  •  finishing.

SSG

Defending the final third by minimizing space, defending crosses and protecting the central area.

RED team being coached playing in a GK-4-3-3 formation missing 3 forward players). 

BLUE team being managed playing in GK- 2-2-3 (missing both full backs and 1 central defender)

  • Central midfielders looking find false full back position (challenged to find space for other players_

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progress specific into a SSG by addition of a goal at the halfway line and removal of restricted zones. SSG played for 2x4mins blocks

Regress by giving a time limit to the attacking team if defending team struggling to win the ball

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Force Direction Of Play Away from Goal - Body Position, Quick Press Using Triggers, Angle of Press.
  • Defend Narrow & Compact - Defend As A Unit, narrow and compact Together, Use reference points for Spacing between units. 
  • Leave Furthest Player - When Ball Is In Wide Area, Leave Free Player in Opposite side of pitch.

Throw ins and corners to add realism to small sided game as well as making the practice flow.

Targets: 1 point for each goal scored for either side. 

5 points for RED team for every block they do not concede
