SAQ Session 1
in this session we look to teach the players about the two different type of central defender #4 aggressor & #5 composure

please review plan carefully and familiarize yourself with all of the coaching points & progressions.

-To win players must touch opposite players knee.
-30 second battle.
-Winners play each others.
Coaching Points:
-Balance your self on the ball of your foot.
-Knee bent leaning forward.
-Try to match opposite players knee before engaging.
Progression
-add a ball the defender now has to steel the ball and maintain possession
-roles swap who ever has possession of the ball will be attacker
-20 second rounds

Organization:
Same grids as before but now used as a channel.
groups of 4 players. per grid
A lot of the balls as spares.
Instructions:
-Defender pass the ball to attacker and must hold him behind the middle line for 5 seconds to win
-(defensive #4 the aggressor) if the attacker goes to penetrate to score the defender will steel the ball and transition to the opposite side of the grid being aggressive in the tackle to win the ball.
Coaching Points:
Defending 4D's
-Delay the attacker
-Deny penetration
-Dictate the attackers movement of where you want them to move using body position
-Defend ,using a tackling technique or deflect the ball away
Types of tackle
-Poke ,using your back foot to push off towards the ball using the front surface of your foot to poke the ball out from attackers feet
-Block ,using your side on stance & keeping your back foot firm as the attacker goes to penetrate use the inside or out side surface of your foot to deny penetration creating block
-Slide ,this tackle is often used as the last resort ,using your leading foot slide into an area where the attacker looks to penetrate making contact with only the ball, toes must be pointed down and you must always lead with one foot.
Defending 1v1 princaples
- Deny penetration via position on field.
- Body position in order to see the whole field.
- Reading visual cue of attacking player’s pass for a possible
interception i.e. eye contact made, head is down to pass.
- If interception is not possible, pressure ball to prevent turn
and make attacker receive on front foot.
-Angle of approach/shape of run to make play predictable
-Can I separate attacker with the ball from supporting player,
make it 1vs1
-Reading visual cues of receiving player in order to decide whether pressure should be applied tightly and/or tackle as
they receive. If receiving player has lifted head up after receiving, defender should look to jockey/retreat.
-Assessing opportunity to tackle, has the attacking player offered the chance to make a challenge? i.e. poor touch or lifted head to assess options.
-Distance from first attacker to determine space in behind.
-Track runner as the ball moves, don’t ball watch
Progressions: Shaded area on diagram
(scenario playing out In transition 5 )
-(Defensive #5 The composure) in any defensive partnership you always have the aggressor and the composed defender. in this scenario we will work on the composed defender making interceptions and tackles then finding a pass out to transition.
- the game starts with a pass from the 5 who will close down the 10 and try to win the ball then find a pass to the 6.
-10 can also find a pass to the 9 for a point.
Coaching points
-black the line of play when pressing
-check sholders to read movements of second attacker
-try not to jump in & be patient.

two starting cones
two scoring gates
teams of 4-6 players
defending team has balls

-defender passes the ball to the attacker and goes to defend
-attacker is traying to get through the gate infront of them
-defender has to steel the ball and attack the opposite gate
-if the defender pushes the ball out of bounds that 1 point but if they steel the score they get 2
-rotate back to your own line defenders and attackers switch after set amount of time coaches choice.
Coaching Points:
-Deny penetration
-Speed of approach
-Angle of approach force player on to weak side
-Correct moments to tackle
-Faint to tackle to force a mistake
-Tackling techniques
-dictate attackers movement back towards their own goal
-Transition to attack
Progressions:
-add goals instead of gate and now the attacking players can score.
-add another attacker in the defensive half and a target 6 for defensive transition and play numbers down 1v2

Coaching the defender
For this activity its all about the defenders reaction and winning the ball back.
without over coaching i want you to set questions to the players based on the below points and see the answers you get then throughout the rest of the session you will go over each of these points and refer back to the answer they gave you right or wrong and teach them correct principles.
-body shape in relation to goal
-speed and angle of movement
-can we steel the ball not just kick it out (tackles to regain Possession)
-angles of transition
