Activity 2 - Protect & Turn
The bandits no longer have a ball in their hands. Their objective of the bandit is to get around the attacker and go chest to chest. That will earn them 1 point.
Progressions
2 Reps @ 45 seconds - Neither player can win the ball off of each other, the objective for the defender is to just get infront of the attacker and go chest to chest. Keep the score and allow each pair to try and beat the score of their partner. Can they
2 Reps @ 45 seconds - If the bandit wins the ball, their job is to take it and dribble out of the square. Once they have done that, they then need to give the ball back to the attacker and let them carry on for the remainder of the time.
2 reps @ 45 seconds - If the bandit steals the ball, their job is to keep it for the remainder of the time. The job of the attacker is then try to win it back and keep it from the bandit for the remainder of the time that is left remaining.
Coaching Points
- How can the attackers find out where the bandits are?
- Attackers what are you trying to protect?
- Attackers, what part of your body are you trying to show the bandit.
- Where do the attackers need to stand.
- Where do the attackers need to look?
- What do the attackers need to look for? Space, Team mates, the defender.
- Can the attackers throw in a fake to get away from the defender/bandit.

Activity 3 - Protect, turn or get tagged in pairs
Players pass in pairs whilst a bandit tries to steal the ball from them. The attacker with the ball has 2 options. (1) to protect the ball when under pressure (2) Use the parents/support player if they are there.
This is going to be much harder as now the focus is on the passing in pairs, so limit the number of bandits. Do not assign 1 bandit to 1 group, allow the bandits to flow around the square, but let them know that they are only allowed to spend a certain amount of time with one group before they move away to another group.
Coaching Points
- What is the defensive jockey position?
- What are the 2 options for the player with the ball?
- If the bandit comes in to throw the ball, what can you do to protect the ball?
- What can you communicate to the attacking player?
- Technical coaching - Correct passing, good control, good distance apart, correct tempo on the pass.
- Where does the player without the ball support from?
- Where do you move into when you have passed the ball?
Progressions
2 Reps at 45 seconds - Stay in working pairs but change pairs after 2 reps. If the defender win s the ball, they must keep it for 3 seconds or dribble out of the square.
2 Reps - Now each group has an assigned bandit. A lot of focus on protecting the ball and where the 2nd attacker must move. [SUPPORT]

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
When the attacking team is either dribbling the ball or passing it out of their half, the defending team must go back to their own half. However, 1 defender is allowed to stay in the attacker's half to apply pressure on any of the attacking players.
Coaching Points
- Attackers what are you trying to protect?
- Attackers, what part of your body are you trying to show the bandit.
- Where do the attackers need to stand.
- Where do the attackers need to look?
- What do the attackers need to look for? Space, Team mates, the defender.
- Can the attackers throw in a fake to get away from the defender/bandit.
The players need to recognised when they need to protect the ball and what they need to look for when they are protecting the ball. Just protecting the ball is not enough. They need to be able to perceive their problem, find the solution and then execute the solutuon.

Activity 1 - Protect, turn or get tagged (10 mins)
Activity 2 - Protect, turn or get tagged
All players will pair up, each with a soccer ball. One player dribbles a ball, their objective is to protect the ball and to understand how and when to turn away from the defender with the ball in their hands. The defender has the ball in their hands, their objective is to throw their ball at their partners ball to gain a point.
How can all the attackers be successful in this exercise?
Progressions
4 reps @ 60 seconds - Let both players have the opportunity to be a bandit and an attacker [Re-ittirate all technical coaching points for the bandit and the attacker]
Between rep 2 & rep 3, can the players introduce a fake to show one way and then go the other?
