Lead In (20 mins)
Organisation
Whites in a 1-2-3-3 formation, (leading to 1-4-3-3) V Yellows in a 1-3-5 formation, (leading to 1-3-5-2). Pitch is cut off at mid/def line & 10 yards in from touch line on both sides.
Aims
Whites looking to effectively stop yellows playing from the back by pressing high appropiately.
Pictures
1) Ball with GK looking to play to out, overall roles of units.
2) Ball bypasses CB's & goes into wing backs or midfield.
3) Unable to press, where players drop to, protect then look to re engage.
Key Roles
- Defensive principles of play.
- Reaction to transition
- Intensity & aggression to win ball early as possible.
CF: Show one way & 'half the pitch' opposite side of the ball. Try to imagine a line between ball & centre circle be in that line. If not on to press allow opposition to have ball in def third but look to re-engage if central CB step in to midddle third.
R/L Wing: Show R/L CB inside, shut off line & pass to wing back. When ball on otherside or unable to press, tuck into shape with 2 AMF, responsibility becomes wing backs. Try to be in a position where we can counter quickly on regain.
AMF: on front foot & on outside shoulder, ball side of opposition mf, ready to anticipate any pass into them. Deeper support for CF & R/L Wing, communication. If unable to press block forward passes & track any forward runs from opposition midfielders
DMF: Screen ball side of opposition AMF. Stay detached to AMF. Communication/encouragement to players in front. If FB's are both pressed be aware of space in behind & be ready to protect.
FB's: Lock on to wing backs on press, show inside. If no pressure on ball protect space in behind, (be on back foot & ready to recover).
GK: Keep line high with communication & own position. Be aware of longer pass.
