Working on 3 components throughout the week at a basic beginner and moderate level. 30 x 35 yards field
Dribbling
NO defensive pressure. player focus: control, understanding for soft touch and try to maintain ball close to them,
- working dribbling at different speeds,
- moving the ball with both feet,
- cutting and turning with the ball and without the ball.
Passing
Working in pairs of 2-3 (based on player #'s) players will work on passing ball to each other within a assigned triangle or Square, with slight movement to receive in and open space,
- players must first work on ball control "stopping ball" and than passing ball to teammate in their new position.
player Focus: make sure player is not just kicking ball back. must control ball, stay mobile, on their toes,, and shift body positioning as necessary. Coach to assist player to understand that it is not about getting rid of ball quickly, but on accuracy. So encourage players to take their time, movement, communication, vision and work on speed later.
Passing and Shooting.
Players (2-3) will be given a start point & assigned color cones throughout field to where they must work together to pass ball through cones (assign a passing count 2,3,4). When they finish passing count, last player can dribble quickly to an assign goal and shoot to score. All players must go back to start point and get new ball. This can be done as game if you have multiple teams, or a time and accuracy challenge.

Make sure players are doing at least 2-3 touches before passing the ball to teammate at first, and then limit to 2 touch pass. In the beginning it is okay if player step on the ball to stop ball if they are not able to do it. The goal is that player understand not to let the ball get away from them. Especial when working with beginners and young players: make sure they are stopping the ball first before attempting to pass the ball to teammate even if they are toeing ball.
After they feel comfortable passing, you can begin to instruct to start using inside of their foot to stop/ control ball, and to also use the inside of their foot to pass ball as well.
Make it a game: players must complete passes to each other, while moving within the assigned cones and area. Finalize by making it into a fun competition after 4-5mins, players will listen to coaches instruction and pass ball with each other, and in a specific color pattern. Players must move around with proper body rotation and technique.
KEY COMPONENTS: show proper technique, body movement and positioning to receive and pass ball.
