Rondo

Rondo:

Set up 2 x 10x10m area | Bibs | Balls | Cones

Play 4v2 / 5v2 possession

Defenders stay in if attacking players make:

- 15 consecutive passes 

- 3 x split passes

If attacker loses possession, that person and the person to their left become the new defenders.

Notes:

- support player on ball either side and in front with good movement 

- Weight of pass

- High level of communication

Passing Practice (10 mins)

Set Up

Half Pitch area | 2 x Full Size goals | 6 x flat discs | 4 x Mannequins | 12 x Footballs

Set up a second 18yard area parallel with an 8m gap between and mannequins 10m apart through the middle. Place flat discs in starting positions for players. 

How to Play

Combination 1 (players in blue)

- Player B on moves forward to receive a pass from Player A - Player B turns and plays through ball to Player C who attempts to score

- Both sides play at the same time for maximum opportunity to practice

- Rotation: A to B, B to C, C to A on other side

Combination 2 (players in black):

- Player A passes to Player B - Player B sets back tom Player A - Player A passes through to Player C to score

- Rotation: A to B, B to C, C to A on other side

- Progression: Player A now plays a clipped ball over the top

Combination 3 (players in blue): 

- Player A passes to Player B - Player B sets back tom Player A - Player A passes wide to Player D, Player D crosses for Player C to score

- Progression: Player A movement inside so through ball is played between mannequins - change of run for player D

- Rotation: A to B, B to C, C to A on other side | Player D stays wide (at least 2 wide players each side)

Details

- Ball speed so that we can play quickly: quick touches | quick turns | 1 touch 

- Weight of through ball: Into the attackers path

- Type of pass: set | to feet | to turn | through | disguise

- Timing of run: break defensive line as ball is played

- Type of run: straight | curved | delayed

Position Game #1

Set Up

Half Pitch area | 2 x Full Size goals | Cones | 12 x Footballs | 16 x Bibs (4 colours)

- 3 teams of 4, bibbed accordingly

- 2 neutral players

How to Play

- 4+GK+Neutrals vs 4 in one half of the area

- Play starts with the coach passing to the attacking team

Attacking team (red)

- Team in possession make at least 3 passes before attempting to play an incisive pass between mannequins (no dribbling through)

- Only the attacker plus one team mates can finish the attack when ball is played through

- Attacking team can use their GK and wide players in the build-up (7v4)

- Once a goal is scored or the ball has gone out, play restarts with the other team attacking

Defending team (blue)

- Prevent opposition from playing through.

- Attempt to win possession in opposition half and quickly score!

- Defenders can not recover if ball is played through

Back 4 (black)

- Prevent the ball being played through

- Must stay in your zone 

- If you intercept, attack! Support counter attack - player with the ball can join the attack. 

Progression

- allow defenders to recover: 1 x def = 2 x att | 2 x def = 3 x att | 

- defenders can only recover once ball is played (no waiting in def half)

Details

Receive to play forwards on minimal touches

Timing & angle of incisive runs

Attackers within the width of the goal for crosses (at least three in box)

1st time finishing, low and corners

Timing / angle of incision run and pass

2nd ball and rebounds

Game Training

Set Up

Half field | Full size goal | 3 x Mini-goals | 12 x Footballs |  2 x Sets of bibs

Blue set up: 2-3-3

Red set up: 1-4-2-1

How to Play

Play starts with a switch between blue CB's

- blue attempt to score in opponents goal

- red score by winning possession and scoring in one of the 3 x mini-goals

- 2 x transitions before restarting

- Only one of the blue back 3 can join the attack, the other two must stay.

Frame

This session is all about making incisive passes to unlock a team who defend using a block. 

Notes - Defending

- Trap opposition in wide areas. Nothing through the middle

- Press from the front if possible

- If press is beaten, look to retreat and repair – protect central areas

Striker #9

  • Stay high & stretch the defense – Pin the center-backs deeper to create space for midfielders.
  • Vary movement – Mix short movements (dropping between the lines) with sharp runs in behind.
  • Use blindside runs – Stay on the defender’s shoulder and time your runs to break the last line.
  • Occupy gaps between defenders – Look for space between centre-backs or between a CB and fullback.
  • Be a focal point – Shield the ball under pressure to allow teammates to join the attack.
  • Quick layoffs – Play one-touch passes to midfielders or wide players to unbalance the block.
Wingers #7/11
  • Stay high and wide to stretch the defense.
  • Mix inside runs and wide positioning to stay unpredictable.
  • Attack with pace & intent—commit defenders.
  • Use quick changes of speed & direction.
  • Mix dribbling angles—cut inside or go wide.
  • 1-2s & give-and-go’s with fullbacks/midfielders.
  • Switch play quickly to attack weak areas.
  • Use low-driven crosses & cutbacks—more effective than lofted balls.
  • Be unpredictable—fake shots or delayed passes can open space.
  • Make diagonal inside runs to disrupt defenders.
  • Time late runs into the box for cutbacks
  • Press / support press immediately after losing possession.
Central Midfielders #6/8/10
  • Stay between lines to receive on the half-turn.
  • Rotate & interchange with teammates to pull defenders out.
  • Drop deeper at times to draw out pressers and create space ahead.
  • Quick, sharp passing to shift the block.
  • Use disguised passes (outside of foot, no-look) to break lines.
  • Drive forward with the ball when space opens up.
  • Look for through balls behind the defense.
  • Make late runs into the box for cutbacks or rebounds.
  • Bounce passes & wall passes with wingers/forwards to open gaps.
  • 1-2s & layoffs to accelerate attacks.
  • Overlaps or underlaps to create numerical overloads.
  • Counter-press immediately after losing possession.
  • Hold defensive shape to prevent counters
  • Full Backs

    • Stay high & wide to stretch the defense.
    • Invert inside at times to overload midfield.
    • Time overlapping runs—don’t go too early.
    • Break lines with passes—find wingers or midfielders between the lines.
    • Drive forward into space when unmarked.
    • Recycle possession quickly if no clear forward option.
    • Deliver low-driven crosses & cutbacks—more effective than lofted balls.
    • Mix up deliveries—early crosses, pull-backs, or cut inside to pass.
    • Combine with wingers—1-2s, underlaps, and overlaps to create chances.
    • Counter-press immediately if possession is lost.
    • Stay compact when ball is on the opposite side.
    • Win second balls to sustain pressure.
    • Recognize when to attack aggressively vs. hold position.
    • Be ready to track back quickly in case of a counter attack

    Training Game

    Set Up

    Half field using width of the penalty box with a goal at either end | 7v7 with both teams set up in a 1-2-3-1 with one neutral player in each of the wide zones

    How to Play

    Normal football rules apply except no corners or throw ins - if ball goes out, restart the game with the GK

    - wide players must stay in wide zone to start

    Progressions

    - one wide player can join in on attack, the other must stay in the wide zone

    Coaching

    - Check learnings from the session are taking place 

    - Coach over the top. Only stop game if absolutely necessary.
