Specific Practice (10 mins)
Welsh Principles of Play-
Understand when and how to combine, create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch.
Organisation:
40 x 30
2 small goals, 1 full-size goal.
8 Attackers (Red) 2-3-3, 6 Defenders (Blue) + 1 GK (Blue) 1-3-2-1.
Practice starts when the coach feeds the ball into the Red team.
Balls placed on halfway line with the coach.
Explanation:
The coach will feed the ball into the Attacking players (Red). The attacking players will look to combine, create and finish goal-scoring opportunities. If the defenders (Blue) win the ball, they can transition into attack and score in either of the mini-goals.
Progression:
Attackers will look to create an overload in wide areas.
Attacking players will now have a 5-second time limit to get a shot or cross on goal.
Key coaching points:
Decision making.
When to play through, around, or over.
Recognise space and exploit opportunities.
Attackers must look to create good angles and passing lines.
Attack with speed and create a goal-scoring opportunity.
Challenges, Conditions & Targets:
In this practice, there are 3 ways to score points. The challenge for the attacking team (Red) is to score a goal in the 11-aside goal. The challenge for the defending team (Blue) is to score in either of the mini-goals.
The attacking team has the opportunity to score either 1 or 2 points with a goal. In order to score 1 point, they must just score in the full-sided goal. In order to score 2, they must complete a 1-2 pass to score.
The defending team has the opportunity to score 3 goals at a time, in order to do this, they must win possession and score in either of the mini-goals.
Key Technical/ Tactical points
Create space & support - when in possession, players should look to use the full area of the field to create length, width and depth whilst using good positioning to create 2v1 and 3v2 situations.
First touch/ body shape - when receiving the ball from a penetrative pass, players should look to receive on the half-turn, and take their first touch away from the pressure to maintain possession and make it difficult for the opposition.
Changing the pace - depending on the pressure from the opposition, attackers may need to ply 1 or 2 touches as well as dribble to get out of danger. When playing quick combinations, players should look to gove support lines to recieve the ball again.
Interventions:
Concurrent-player-coach intervention during periods of play, the practices remain uninterrupted.
Terminal- player-coach intervention during predetermined breaks in play.
Walkthrough - the coach utilizes this technique to give players a clear idea of what is required from a practice or block of work. Show players how you would like them to switch play, using a curve.
Coaching process- the coach identifies a problem during play, provides feedback, rehearsal, and restarts practice from the same positions that the problem starts.
