Positional Awareness (10 mins)

Objective:

- 2 teams positioned as a back four (with 2 attacking full backs), a defensive midfielder, and an attacking midfielder.

- Green player is a neutral player that is positioned as an attacking midfielder for both teams.

- Aim is to pass the ball around in this shape, in an unopposed environment.

- Focusing on capability of playing out from the back, with attacking full backs looking to find an attacking midfielder. (With centre backs encouraged to push up also)

Coaching Points:

- Players should look to control the ball and release to a team mate in a positive manner.

- Players asking for the ball are encouraged to think about where they are going to make their next pass, and whethere they are in the correct position.

Progressions:

- Can the players take a limited number of touches? (1-2 touch for control and pass)

- Can the players look to release the ball positively in a shoretened amount of time (game related as if they were under pressure)

Opposed attacking wide play (25 mins)

Objective:

- Coach plays ball to a team (orange or white) and they attack through their 'attacking midfielders'.

- 2 attacking midfielders and one full back will attack the opposition as an underload (3v5)

- As the attack is an underload, the team in possession must aim to attack with pace, purpose and directly.

- Players score 1 point by dribbling the ball through the 'end zone' shaded areas.

- Once the orange team are tackled, white look to 'counter attack' with the ball going through the attacking midfielders (in shaded area) supported by one full back.

- If counter attacked correctly, whites can work in a 3v4 underload.

Coaching Points:

- Players are positioned in a formation of 4-3-3 (hence the emphasis on attacking full backs), however as a reverse to previous matches where the team have played 4-2-3-1 (4-3-3 with 1 attacking midfielder) we are looking at one holding midfielder with two attacking midfielders.

- Attacking midfielders in the central zone can not be tackled by any other players whilst in the shaded area.

- Coach is looking to continuously increase the tempo of the play and looking for continuous counter attacking play.

- Can the players play the ball wide in order to stretch the opposition's shape?

Progressions:

- Players are given a time allocation within their counter attacks.

- Each attacker must touch the ball in the oppositions half.

Situational game (15 mins)

Objectives:

- Match situation, focusing on movement and positioning of full backs.

- Aim of the game is to score a goal inside of the shaded area in front of the goal.

- Full backs encouraged to press when their team is in possession of the ball.

-Coach to add points and scenarios throughout the exercise.

Coaching Points:

- Focus on wide play in order to 'stretch the opposition' to create gaps/ space.

- Neutral player on both teams so coach advises them to stay within the middle third.

- Upon defending the ball, can the opposition work on what they practiced during the previous exercise (counter attacking with attacking full backs).

Progressions:

- Can only score from a cross.

- First time finish (running onto the ball)

- Can the attacking full backs place themselves in a goal scoring position?
