Key Outcomes:

- Small sided game to get players into a good way of thinking towards the topic without too much instruction from the coach. Also allows for instant movement upon arrival and warming of body.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Introduce finding space mini game to encourage players to make use of the entire playing area.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

- use different surfaces of the foot to dribble the ball

- right/left foot

Technical part - Unopposed (20 mins)

Technical Part Outcomes:

To learn and practice defending techniques

Technical Part Set Up:

20x20m playing area. 2 players on each end and 1 defender in the middle.

1 defender on the outside passing the ball in.

-player passes the ball into one side ( white team)

-the white players objective is to pass the ball across to the red team

-the defender now has to cut off the pass and force them into a mistake, and stop the ball from going across

-switch the defender every 2 min

Key Points:

- close down attacker

- block the pass across

- working hard to get in front of the defender

- shuffling your feet

Specific Mechanics of Defending:

- Get in line

- Pressure on the ball

- Deceleration

- Body position

- Stay on toes

- Be patient

- Decision

- Recovery run (movement)

- Tracking players

Coaching Points Introduced:

- Can your angle of approach ensure that the attacker can't play forward and you block any passing lanes

- Can you tackle with the foot that will allow you to keep possession

- Watch the ball

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

As a progression:

- alter the size of the playing area

- time limits

- allow defenders leave the defending zone

As a regression:

- add one more defender to help

- force players who pass the ball use 1/2 touches

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Introduce points system:

Each successful pass 1 point

5 successful passes 2 extra points

10 successful passes 5 extra points

If defenders intercept the ball they can score - 2 extra points

Skill part - Opposed (20 mins)

Skill Part Outcomes:

In a 1v1 teach players how to:

- react quickly when losing the ball in transition encourage players to be side on and low down this will ensure that they can change direction quickly if beaten

- adopt a half-turned body position so they can react quickly to changes of direction from the attacker.

- prevent the attacker from turning if they're facing their own goal

Set Up:

30x30 area, balls, 2 groups of players.

Coach assigns numbers to players on either team

- Coach triggers the start. Coach calls out numbers (1v1 or 2v2 etc) and passes into the space.

- Players need to sprint around before getting to the ball.

- First team to the ball become attackers, other team to defend. If defenders win the ball, they can attack opposite goal.

- Play restarts after ball goes out of bounds.

Key Points:

- Immediate pressure on the ball from first defender.

- Second defender balance.

- Patience, avoid diving in without communication from the attacker.

- Communication to partner defender.

- Bent knees, side on, arms length away

Considerations:

Focus on technical breakdowns.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

As a progression:

- If the red player regains possession, can score into their attacking goal.

If the cyan player scores, must turn and defend against the next red player in the queue - the previous defender collects their ball and joins the end of their queue.

- 2v1 or 2v2

As a regression:

- 1v1

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

- if one of the players dominates in defending in the game, allow the opponent to score goals in both ways

- If players don't communicate in 2v1 situation, they have to begin again

- if one team loses 5 goals down, they do1. physical exercises, e.g. jumping jacks, squats or one lap moderate running 2. ball manipulation exercises, e.g. tap toes, juggling, football feints.

Set Up:

20x20m 3v3 +1 with teams scoring in designated small target goals.

Considerations:

Can players use what they have practiced in the session in a real match situation?

- Can you cover passing channels if you're the 2nd defender

- Can you cover to block passing channels

- Can you recognise cues when the attacker is not in control of the ball

- Can you recognise that  there is no pressure on the ball players should drop the line reshape and wait for opportunities to engage.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

As a progression:

- 1 or 2 touches to receive and pass the ball

- 10 seconds to attack

As a regression:

- unlimited touches

- 20 seconds to attack

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Introduce the point system:

- intercepting 1 point
