Size & pitch geography

For this practice the wide areas won't be used just yet.

Timings

2 Minutes x 30 second rest (Walk through) so players understand

3 Minutes x 20 seconds rest (Game pace) increase tempo

Key Factors

  • To develop players understanding of keeping shape off the ball.

  • When to drop off so the ball can't be played over the top. When to set in together so the ball can't be played through, and when to push wide so the ball can't be played round.

  • How staying in shape and being compact makes it harder for attacking team to play through us.

Coaching Points

  • Stay narrow and compact.

  • Force play away from goal.

  • Good communication.

  • Don't press individually.

  • Make the pitch small.

  • Making sure there's no spaces in behind.

Management Points

  • Force play wide.

  • Defend narrow.

  • Stay in shape.

Progressions

  • Make the area bigger.

  • Let attacking team have an over load in the next forward zone.
  • Using a magic man for attacking team (If we have odd numbers in the practice)

Regressions

  • Limit touches for attacking team.

  • Taking a zone away.

  • Adding an extra defender (maybe taking a player out of the attacking team)

Targets/ Challenges/ Conditions

  • Point for every time the attacking team go backwards.

  • 2 Points for winning the ball and playing forward.
  • Give attacking team time limit on playing the ball forward.

SSG- Principles Of Defending The Breaking lines In a game type scenario

Key factors.

  • To stop play going through our defensive lines.

  • Knowing when to push up and apply pressure as a unit and when to drop off into shape.
  • If their back line has it can we drop off and make it hard for them to play through.
  • If we apply pressure will this leave spaces in behind for attacking team to play into.

Organisation

Using half a pitch with two goals.

Using pitch markings.

Player to keep bibs on from pervious drill.

2 Teams to set up in a 332 formation.

Left/Right sided midfield players act as wingers in attack.

Explanation

Teams to keep their formation and shape.

  • Objective is for the defending team to force play out wide or backwards.

  • Making sure players stay narrow and compact how can defending team keep shape without leaving any gaps in behind while trying to win the ball.

  • How fast can sides get back into shape if the ball is lost making it difficult for team to play through, over or around us.
  • Both teams are focusing on defending the breaking line.

Coaching Points

  • Can defending team keep the pitch small.

  • Can defending team shuffle over when attacking team are trying to open gaps for forward passes.

  • Body Shape when defending, not flat footed on our toes side on.

  • Don't follow the player can we pass them on

  • If we follow the player this could open up space in behind for the ball to be played into and for the attacker to run into, by passing the player on this allows us to keep shape and be disciplined.

  • Look for triggers when to press.
  • When attacking team are playing side to side can we shuffle over and not over commit.
  • Limting touches for a higher tempo game.
Targets/ Challenges/ Conditions

Point for every time the ball goes backwards. Two points for every time the ball is won.Three points for a goal.
  • Give attacking team a time limit for getting the ball forward.
  • Limit touches.
