Specific Practice

Specific Practice:

Session Objective: In possession creating and exploiting overloads by using numerical advantages, the when the how to find the spare player to create movement to make an overload by changing positions and making the opponent commit and using the ball speed to trigger the attack on time.

Session Organization: I will be coaching the BLUE team with the principles of Creating & Exploiting Overloads.

Blue team: 0-2-3-2 (7 players) Working from the back 11V11 1-4-4-2 I have removed the keeper 2 defenders and a midfielder.

Red team: 1-3-3-0 (7 players) Working from the back 11V11 1-4-4-2 I have removed 1 defender one midfielder and two Strikers.

Total number of players: 14 players.

Pitch size: Half pitch.

Duration of the session: 10 minutes specific practice.

Conditions, Challenges & Targets: I will be coaching the blues. Blues will be challenged to do run on the full backs with two on 1 creating overloads. The target for both teams will be to score but reds will have 10 seconds to score on mini goals so that we can always start over from the blues. Reds will also be conditioned in the specific practice not to interchange their positions. Meaning defenders cannot go further than their midfielders. This is to make them a bit rigid to their play allowing the extra player in blues to take advantage and apply the principles of overloads more by creating more spaces in width and length. The spare movement will be challenged on the blues as any 2 Vs 1 situation will carry an extra point if they score in such exploitation of overload.

SSG

SSG:

Blue team: 1-2-3-2 (8 players) Working from the back 11V11 1-4-4-2 I have removed 2 defenders and a midfielder and added the keeper for SSG.

Red team: 1-3-3-0 (7 players) Working from the back 11V11 1-4-4-2 I have removed 1 defender one midfielder and two Strikers.

Total number of players: 15 players.

Pitch size: Half pitch.

Duration of the session: 15 minutes small sided game.

Conditions, Challenges & Targets: After the specific practice, conditions will be removed and we will go into a small sided game for 15 minutes to see how much free play allows the creation and exploitation of overloads. Both teams will be given the target of scoring but still reds will have the 10 seconds challenge so that blues can get the ball early and the sessions stays intact to the topic.

Problem 1: Blues unable to make a successful pass through.

Solution: Make the spare player run into space and create a 2V1 overload and exploit the space marked on arrows.

Problem 2: Good man marking and zonal movements stopping the attack.

Solution: Inter change the positions so the defenders lose their markers, make the opponent commit and use the ball speed and movements of the spare player on creating and exploiting the space with attacking overloads.

Reflections:

The movements of the attacking blues players using the spare man positioning, and ball speed had a good impact on the session. The width and depth was well exploited with 2V1 situations with good interchange of position by blues. I believe the two problems and solutions with good coaching process inputs had a good impact on the session to replicate this good in the practice. I learned the importance of giving the little details to my players in this session. The timings of movement, when. how, where, the ball speed and the what ifs and buts were well orchestrated with coach led and player led examples during my interventions. From the player led examples I knew that my coaching positions were sometimes too close to the ball so I noted that as something I will need to improve. My action plan going forward would be to try this practice with numbers balanced to see whether our boys could still create overloads with equal numbers to be more realistic in specific practice. But as this was the first session of such I wanted to make the session flow and had one less in the specifics. The reflection of the session tells me I should do the opposite and have equal or less on the attacking team to test them and bring more life and realism. I would also take different coaching positions next time for example a zonal view and a side view rather than being too close to the ball so I get to see and think different options on how we can coach to create and exploit overloads by using numerical advantages centrally, sides by player movements, interchanges, ball speed and the use of the spare.
