Defensive Shape

1-4-4-1-1

We must be a solid defensive unit when out of possession. As a unit we must press wherever the ball is. If the opponent plays a 1-4-3-3, we must match their midfield to neutralize them (e.g., our 10 should match opponent's 6).

Note: If the closest player to the ball applies pressure to an opponent, the rest of the unit will cover and provide balance. Our players must always attempt to match up opponents to block passing lanes and shooting opportunities.

Pressing Shape

1-4-2-3-1

We must press high as a unit. If the opponent breaks through our defensive lines, the closest player towards the ball should delay the attack while everyone else regroups and makes it compact. We want our players to pressure, cover and stay balance.

Zone 1 Build Up

1-2-1-4-1-2

We need to use the width and length of the pitch. Our players need to displace the opponent to create space in between the defensive lines and half spaces. The goal of playing out from the back is to progress together into the middle third (Zone 2). Midfield must rotate diamond/box to create angles proactively!

Note: Every player needs to apply vision. Our players need to be alert and know the movement of the opponent and our teammates. It's important to play positionally and circulate the ball with quality. If we experience high pressing, our Goal Player (GK) can play long precise ball to our full backs to jump the lines.

Zone 2 Build Up

1-3-1-3-3

Once we've reached the middle third, one of our fullbacks can help us create a back three with our 5 and 4. Our midfield will create a dynamic triangle (stretching and rotating). This will allow one of our fullbacks to push higher while giving us width and depth.

Important: Fullbacks must read and understand the game to consistently position and reposition themselves in attack and defense (One moves higher, the other one can stay to create a back three in case of a counter).

Zone 3 Build Up

1-3-1-3-3

Important: Fullbacks must read and understand the game to consistently position and reposition themselves in attack and defense (One moves higher, the other one can stay to create a back three in case of a counter). Also, midfield will maintain triangle shape and rotate it as the ball moves for more flexibility and passing opportunities through central channels.

Defensive Corner

Our back line must implement zonal defending in the keeper's box. Everyone else must apply man-to-man marking. Our forward on its respective wide channel will intercept any short pass to a wide positioned opponent.

Attacking Corner

Our corners must be aimed towards the far post. Our attackers must be ready to make the run into the zones close to the far post. Our attackers must start the run from the edge of the box to make the attacking corner kick unpredictable and more dynamic.

Note: Our 9 must be in front of the goalkeeper to block his view. No foul. Move and block keeper view and movement.

Defensive Free Kick

During free kicks against us, the closest player to the ball should delay the opponent's set piece by being in front of the ball until the referee tells our player otherwise.

Note: Midfield must make up the wall with forwards. Our back line will stay out of the 18 yd box.

Attacking Free Kick

Our free kick taker must always have two options:

1. Direct precise shot on target

2. Opportunity to connect a cross with teammates far post

3. Opportunity to execute our new play called, "The Net!"
