Passing and receiving over distance (arrival activity) (15 mins)

Area:

Use third of tournament sized 9v9 pitch (pitch 65m L x 35m W)

Equipment:

cones, discs, poles, balls

Objective:

put players into 3's and have them simply pass and move around the space passing to each other. Passes need to be over reasonible distance. Distance under 8 meters is questioned and encourage that group to pass further apart.

Progression:

Ask the players to count how many completed passes they can over the distance with out the ball being hit against another team of 3 or overhit or missplaced pass. only completed passes count. Other teams are not intetionally allowed to interfere other teams passes.

Key points:

Scan area, head up before playing pass, be on half turn when recieving to move off into space. Encourage players to receive the ball on the move and not being static.

3 is the magic number (match) (30 mins)

Area:

create pitch tourmanent size approx 65m (L) x 35m (W)

Equipment:

cones, discs, poles,bibs, balls, goals

Objective:

This practice is designed to encourage the players to move the ball quickly under limited touches to progress up the pitch in possesion.Split the players into 2 teams. The rules are if you are the team in possesion you only have 3 touches in the defensive and middle third. If you are in possesion in the attacking third there is no limit on touches but we want to encourage being direct and shoot on sight minset. This zone is Free play".If the other team win back possesion in that attacking third, they are then in their defensive third and the 3 touch rule applies. To encourage shielding or hiding the ball I have changed the rule slightly.Instead of the player not being able to touch the ball after 3 touches, the player is allowed to touch the ball but not allowed to move. This means they can shield, hold of an opponent and manouver the ball away from danger to try and delay till a team mate comes and takes the ball. The player is not allowed to pass the ball whilst doing this. This will result in possesion to the other team.

Progression:

If the tempo of the passing is not quick enough, impliment a 3 second & 3 touch rule in possesion except the attacking thirds in possesion.

Simplify:

If success isn't achieved then lock players in the thirds to create larger spaces between players so that players have move time on the ball to move the ballover greater distances and move up the pitch and counter attack.

Key points:

Ephasise the need to scan and be on the move and not static. Body shape.Be on the half turn. No offsides. Think ahead. Decide early where you want to go and execute your decision so the player is not caught on the ball.Stretch the pitch both legth and width ways with your starting positions to create larger gaps when in possesion.

Shooting overload (20 mins)

Area:

Third of tournament size 9v9 pitch.

Equipment:

cones,discs, poles, bibs, balls.

Objective:

Players split equaly on the 3 cones on each side of the attacking third. there are 2 defenders andf a goal keeper. One of the coaches feeds the ball to any of the three attacking players. The three players on the cones then attack the goal and try to score. The defenders can press and tackle. The ephasis is to attack at speed and be direct. Shooting S.O.S is encouraged however, if a team mate is open and the player is shhoting from a difficult angle then reply to encourage good deciision making. Also replay for instances when players pass whena good shooting opppotunity has arisen. If players slow the playor go back on themselves count down 3-2-1 for them to relase the pass or shoot. Once the ball is out of playfeed the next 3 so the defenders are out of position which should allow to exploit the overload. After 3 or 5 cycles change the defenders.

Key points:

S.O.S (shoot on sight), use space to stretch defenders. get the ball in early. try one touch finish. Be alert and attack with speed when defenders are out of position.
