Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Duration: 8 mins
Number of Players: 11-12
Objectives: Develop players' ability to break through defensive lines. Improve passing, receiving and spatial awareness. Same set up as Drill one
Condition: Limit of 2 touches & maximum of 15 seconds to score or the ball is turned over. Floating players can only use the central zone. If odd number of players then one player can support both teams.
Scoring Points:
1 point for each successful stop of the ball in the end zone
2 points for receiving the ball through the floating players
3 points for moving the ball from your end zone to the scoring end zone in under 5 passes that includes a minimum of one pass to the floating player.
Focus is to reinforce breaking through lines whilst maintaining possession and encouraging team work.
Key Coaching Points: Encourage players to play through, around or over the opposition. This will encourage creativity and strategic thinking.
'Make the pitch big' this will remind players to utilise the full width and depth of the area.
Move the ball quickly: Stress the importance of quick, decisive passing.
Confidence to take the ball. Support players in building confidence in receiving and playing under pressure.
Regressions: If needed, area could be made bigger or more touches allowed. Extra time could be given too.
Reflections: Again the players understood the topic and felt that it was a good progression fro drill one with more intensity, realism and decision making needed.

Drill One
Duration: 20 mins for both drills including time for instructions to the players, breaks and interventions if needed.
Number of Players: 11-12
Objectives: Develop players' ability to break through defensive lines. Improve passing, receiving and spatial awareness.
Session Breakdown: Split teams into 2 with different colour bibs. If odd numbers then use one player for both attacking sides)
Drill 1: Create a rectangular playing area 25 x 30 yards. 2 'end' zones at opposite ends
Static Receiving (4 minutes)
Objective is to practice passing in a static position and receiving the ball in the zone area.
Condition: No defenders. Focus on body positioning and first touch
Key Coaching Points: Encourage players to receive with their back foot and open their body
Introduce Movement (4 minutes)
Objective: Players must move to the end zone area to receive the ball
Condition: Add a light defender (floating player) to add some pressure and realism.
Key Coaching Points: Encourage communication and quick footwork to create space
Breaking Through The Lines (4 minutes)
Objective: Players work to pass the ball through the centre area and switch it to the other end zone.
Condition: limit touches for the winning team (e.g. 2 touches)
Key Coaching Points: Emphasise quick decision making, movement, communication and looking for passing lanes.
Reflections: This was a relatively easy concept for the players to understand with a gentle, unopposed introduction building gradually to become more realistic and challenging.
