Key principle
- Protect central areas
Roles
- CF to screen and cut off any passes into opposition CDM, roll is to allow CBs to keep the ball and rotate possession
- Wingers protect inside and stop pass inside to opposition winger when they roll inside. Need to force the pass into FB on the outside but keep ball away from central area and dont get split by pass into oppo winger
- CMs protect centrally, shuffle with the ball but when ball gets played into opposition CMs that is the time to put pressure on them and force them to play backwards
- CDM to shuffle with ball and cut off any direct passes into opposition CF, keep body position open and check shoulders to see where the no10 is and whether to pass them on to CBs
- FBs to mark inside and go in with opposition winger should they roll inside, get tight to them in order to force them back should ball be played into them
- CB to mark channel side when ball on their side to protect the channel ball and cover the FB should winger move inside, body position open to be aware of CFs movements
- Opposite FB to tuck around and cover, communicate with winger to tuck around and be available for any loose balls or knock downs
Triggers
We allow the opposition to reach around half way line before applying real pressure on the ball in an attempt to win it. Once the ball is played past that half way point and the ball is in midfield then we must look to get tight and aggressive on the ball but continue to force the play wide. Intensity of defending is important in our half of the pitch, we can't be passive and allow the opposition to have the ball like we will in their half
What if's
What if winger moves inside to create space for FB in the channel? Our FB to go tight to winger and stop them getting on the ball, our winger to track FB and deal with the 1v1 if the ball gets to them, they must show the player down the line and prevent them coming inside, ball side CB must shuffle around and cover and may have to pop out should the FB beat the winger and be in a position to cross, opposite CB picks up CF channel side and body position must be open
What if opposition no10 makes run in behind the defence? It is the job of our CDM to be aware of where the no10 is and as a general rule track and follow their run in behind the defence in order to let the CBs deal with the opposition CF, however if the no10 has peeled away from the ball before making their run, it is important that we communicate the information effectively and it may be that the CDM passes the runner on to the defence as we do not want the CDM getting pulled too far out of position.
What if the opposition CDM rolls out into false FB position? Don't be tempted to get drawn out as a midfield, hold positions centrally and cut off forward passes that could penetrate between the lines

Roles when winning the ball back and counter attacking
- Should we win the ball back in any area of the pitch then with the space that the FBs leave behind them, the key areas to try and hurt the opposition are in wide areas
- First look for the ball winner should be to look forward and into the space in the wide areas
- If we can get the ball into the CFs feet to hold up the ball and allow us time to attack then this is one option
- Can the CF get hold of the ball and keep it under control for us?
- If they are able to do this then it is vital that we get runners beyond them and the ball played into the space
- As a general rule, if we can get out on the opposite side to where the ball has been won, we will look to do this
- Once ball has been played into CF, the winger on opposite side has their trigger to run beyond, once the ball is under control and we have it secured, the option to play beyond the defence is there
- Can the CF play the ball into that channel for the winger to run on to and allow us to counter attack quickly?
- Can there also be a runner from the opposite side in order to make the box for a cross should it come? This would likely be the winger on the opposite side or the number 10 or CM for us
- If we are able to counter quickly then we need to do this but if it is not on to do so, securing possession and not allowing our counter attack to be countered is vital
What if?
What if we can't get the ball into the CFs feet? Then it may be an option for our CF to run the channel and a more direct pass into the wide space. It could also be that a winger or midfield runner makes this run and it is a more direct pass into their run or into the space for them to run on to.
Once we get into high areas there must be an output. CF must make the box, winger/midfield runner must make the back post and another midfielder should look to make the edge of the box to offer the cutback
Options for ball carrier on counter attack
- Shot on goal
- Cross into box CF or winger
- Cut back to deeper midfield runner
- If attack slowed down, vital to maintain possession of the ball

Learning Outcomes
1. Understand roles and responsibilities defensively within 4-5-1 system
2. Understand when to drop off and triggers to press
3. Recognise where we can attack the opposition on transition
Blocks
3x8 minute blocks
2 minute rest between blocks
Starting positions
-Team are to retreat into mid-block to allow the opposition GK to play out to CBs, key principle is to protect central areas
-Back 4 high line to squeeze space in front of them but not too high as we are looking to drop a bit deeper to allow the opposition to have the ball
-CDM to screen passes into opposition CF and have an awareness of where oppo no10 is
-CMs to start inside and hold position centrally, don’t be tempted to follow markers when opposition are looking to play out
-Wingers start inside and narrow and deeper, in line with their CMs
-CF to drop slightly deeper to allow opposition CBs to have the ball and screen any passes into midfield areas
