Description

Taking advantage of some fine weather, this session focuses on skills needed for penalty corner attack - injecting and trapping.

Get players moving straight away into a fast paced, small sided game, then break down the PCA skills to practice. Once you move into the D, don't have more than 5/6 players to avoid too much waiting around. You can rotate groups into small sided games and PCA routines.

The You Tube clip is quite chatty (!!) but entertaining and breaks down the skills.

Don't forget to make sure that players know the basic rules of penalty corners, including when they are awarded.

No defending of corners please, just focus on attacking skills.

Small Sided Game - Free Hit

SET UP

  • Three goals with different scoring values.
  • Coach can feed the ball anywhere to start play.
  • Attacking overload.
  • Attackers have 10 chances to score - ie. 10 balls fed in from the coach.
  • If the ball goes out of play, or the attacking team commit a foul, that ball is dead.
  • Defenders are aiming to win possession and pass the ball back to the coach.

Inject & Trap

SET UP

  • Working in pairs, set up diagonally from each other across the pitch to practice injecting and trapping.
  • Use any pitch line to act as the baseline.
  • Six injections and swap roles.
COACHING POINTS - Injector
  • Feet, hips and shoulders parallel to the target line.
  • Right foot is almost level with the ball, behind the baseline, pointing at the ball.
  • Left foot pointing to where the receiver is, in front of the baseline.
  • Ball is in the hook of the stick.
  • Drag the ball along the ground to push the ball towards the receiver.
COACHING POINTS - Trapper
  • Trap low to the ground with reverse stick on the ground.
  • Don't have your stick too upright, it should be at an angle to trap the ball.
  • Don't put your fingers where you are trapping the ball!

PCA - Routines

  • Move to a D and indicate positions for injector, trapper and striker.
  • The ball must be trapped outside the D!
  • Work through a straight strike at goal.
  • Each player rotates to a new position after each injection. Have 2-3 resting players.
  • If players are successful in these positions, start looking at variations, or routines.
  • No defence in the goal please, just a keeper if you have one kitted up.
