Option 1

PHASE - When the full back (2) is involved in a race out to the touchline - either in possession or chasing a lose ball...

This is a trigger for:

the wide man on that side (7) to get wide as you can quickly to offer a passing option

the centre forward (9) to run into the channel for the long ball

the nearest CDM (4) to move towards the ball to close the gap should the (2) lose the race, and to be a security if the pass to (7) fails, or receive a set back pass from (7) if the pass from (2) is successful

This is the movement and triggers for 2 different passing options. The 2 knows he can play either pass - Pass A into 7 or pass B long into 9.

In option A - 2 to 7, to 4...there is a through ball on into the path of ( who is running out to in (means the ball doesn't have to be straight and risk running to the keeper)

In option B - 2 to 9 - we keep possession high up the pitch, 9 can either set it back to the 7, or run with the ball looking to get to the byeline as 10 and 11 attack the penalty box with supporting runs.
