Back Foot Receive Game

Skill Game

Core Skill:

  • Back foot receiving the ball to play to space.

  • Attacking the space.
  • Passing.

Key Skills:

Attacking

  • Scissor, Cruyff, body feint, step over, sole roll, v slap, etc. (Player B or player with the ball)

  • Movement off the ball to create space for the ball carrier, or for next pass (Player C)
  • Movement to anticipate pass (Player D)
Defensive

  • Anticipating the Pass: They read the game and predict where the ball might be played next. Position yourself accordingly.

Equipment & Setup:

  • 16 cones
  • five players per team (three players within the diamond and two on apposing end zones)
  • 2 lots of bibs
  • Ensure pitch size is not too small, we don't want to encourage long passes from end zone to end zone for this practice. We want to encourage ball movement & 1v1 situations.

Explanation:

1. Game start by coach lobbing the ball into the diamond.

2. Once a player receives the ball (Player A) then must move the ball to there nearest End Zone.

3. Player A passes to the Player B from one side of the End Zone, and Player B must back foot receive and must player out from the opposite side (KEY LEARNING: Playing forward to space)

4. Player A replaces Player B int he End Zone once they've completed the pass and as Player B dribbles out with the ball the other side.

4. If the defending team win the ball, the must complete the same task as above with their end zone players.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage receiving on the half turn to play forward within the game to move the ball from left to right/right to left.
  • Encourage the END ZONE player to anticipate their receiving pass and to drive into space for the next attack to be successful.
  • Encourage players on the pitch to play to the END ZONE players from one side, to create space for them to exit the other side.

Rules:

  • Players in the END ZONE must stay within the end zone until the receive a pass.
  • Players in the END ZONE must drive out with the ball from the opposite side the receive the ball.
  • The player that passes to the END ZONE player must replace them in there until they receive a pass.
  • END ZONE players cannot pass it to each other. The ball must move through the GAME ZONE and other players are encouraged to be utlised.
Score:

  • The attacking team must move the ball from one END ZONE to other END ZONE to score one point.
  • Nominate a captain to keep score for their team.
  • If the ball goes out. Coach lobs a new ball in.
