Using the marked cones over a 5-8 yard distance (depending on age). The goalkeeper can use various footwork patterns to get from one side of the cones to the other.
Footwork can involve:
-Single foot steps
-Double foot steps
-Weaving
-Side facing forward and backward movements (facing both ways)
-Jumping over or between the cones.
We don't advise doing all of these movememnts in one session, chosing practices that increase a good footwork pattern that your goalkeeper has (to increase confidence), before moving onto one he struggles with.

Starting on the post facing towards the corner flag, the goalkeeper turns into the mini-goal (formed by the post and cone) to recieve a serve straight at them to be caught.
Serves can varied dependant on what the goalkeeper needs. Balls from the ground are good for low catches and realistic ball movement in the air. Half volleys are good for mid hieght saves (Knees to chest) but can be unpredictable. Volleys are good for high catches (chest upwards).
If the serve is bad, the goalkeeper should still try to stop the ball from going into the net. Never let them watch a ball enter the net. "If you don't go, you'll never know", is a good phase to bring to training.

This is a power exercise. The server hits a hard half volley, close but not at the goalkeeper. The goalkeepers aim is simply to save the goal.
As this is a power exercise, the goalkeeper should be given praise simply for touching the ball, even if it still goes in. This praise needs to be given for confidence but allows you to say, "next time can we push it just that little bit (higher/wider), to get the ball (over/around) the post.

A progression from the "Post Catches" the goalkeeper starts on the post facing the corner flag. The goalkeeper turns into the mini goal to recieve a straight serve from the first server for a catch. The goalkeeper then throws the ball back and moves into line for a shot from the second server.
