Arrival activity- Technical skills (20 mins)

SET UP:

> Players to start at opposite side of pitch or marked out area.

> Coach to be central to practice with a good supply of balls.

> Task 1 to be mirrored as shown on pitch. Likewise with Task 2 and 3.

KEY POINTS:

Task 1

1. Player 1 to dribble towards mannequin, performing a selected skill move from below, coach can repeat skill moves for a number of sets. Player 2 to run to mannequin with no ball, then to move to opposite side of mannequin 'mirroring' Player 1's movement.

Skill moves :- -Feint/disguise -Scissors -Double scissors -Drag -Cruyff -Maradona -Ronaldo chop -Step over -Roll to step over -Roll to step over and touch -Matthews.

2. Player 4 to then dribble towards mannequin with ball. Player 3 to run in without the ball.

**CP1**- Player 1 to dribble at pace and with head up. Showing good spatial awareness and distance from mannequin before performing skill move.

**CP2**- Player to accelerate and then look to decelrate with head up before changing direction (opposite to Player 1).

Task 2

1. Players 5 and 6 to now both have a ball dribbling towards the mannequin. Players to decide 'on the run' the direction they will move past the mannequin. Performing skill moves as highlighted in Task 1. Players must go opposite ways.

2. Can now play a 1/2 bounce pass with Players 7 and 8 when set is completed.

**CP's as above** **Decision making on the run v.imp**

Task 3- Match scenario / positional practice

1. Players 9 and 11 to dribble into mannequin. Perform a turn out/away from mannequin.

Turns :- -Hooks -Drag back -Cruyff -Step over -Firmino -Scissors reverse -Feints -L turn -V cut.

Play a pass to supporting team mate. #10 and #12 in image.

> Player 9 arcs their run to receive a through ball in behind. Checking their inside shoulder as they run. Then completing the passing pattern with a ball to Player 14. Repeat dribble, turn out and passing pattern.

> Player 11 has a slighly different movement pattern. As above they play back and then open their body up the same side, to receive on the back foot and dribble forward to play to Player 13.

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

1. Coach to add in opposed practice where players opposite have to practice their jockeying as player dribble towards them.

2. Time cap or challenge to see which team can all complete in a relay format, sit down when finished.

2. Add in an end product of a small goal to finish in.

Review / Reflect (to be completed after each session)..

1. How did the players find the arrival activity?

2. Progress or regress with skill moves and turns?

3. Allow players to be inventive and creative / create skill combos for next sessions arrival activity (HOMEWORK idea).

Set piece situations (20 mins)

SET UP: Set pieces- Free kick and corner

Free kick

1. Players will set up as highlighted on pitch. #7 will shape to strike the fk at goal.

2. At the last moment #10 will run and step over the ball timing his run to the right side of the wall.

3. #9 will peel off the inside of the wall at the same time and then receive the pass from #7.

4. #9 will make a decision on whether he can score or play the ball for #10 to strike at goal.

Corner kick

1. #6 will set up to take the corner signaling for the highlighted move. One hand in the air.

2. #8 will run from the near post to look to receive the ball, his run is a decoy and he will peel out and look to find space in the area.

3. As he moves to the ball #11 will start his run from the back post, slow then changing pace as #8 peels out.

4. He will then look to turn on the byline and finish fron the angle or pick out a free team mate in the area.

5. Ideally a right footer from the image on the pitch. On the opposite side #11 should ideally be a left footer.

KEY POINTS:

1. Timing of runs and pass.

2. Weight of pass and disguise to the movements.

3. Players trying to create a GSO so playersto make good decision in the right moment.

4. Element of surprise.

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

Free kick

1. Likewise #10 could play the pass and #7 make the run down the side of the wall. #7 look to strike or cut back to #9 or other vailable players in the game moment.

Corner

1. First player (#8) could bounce the ball back to the corner taker (#6) and look to deliver to the back post. Big bodies to attack this area.

2. As above but now #6 will look to still pick out #11 who has checked his run to an angle to turn and release a shot.

Review / Reflect (to be completed after each session)..

1. Did the players enjoy taking the Free Kicks and corner variations?

2. Rotate players so that all are getting a turn at each role.

Fitness- Agility (10 mins)

SET UP:

> Four groups of players at each corner. One player ready to move off mannequin.

> Next player ready to step in when player in front has passed and set off on their SAQ/Agility set.

> Coach to have readily available balls.

> Increase passing ball speed and running speed as we progress.

KEY POINTS:

1. Player #6 to start passing square by playing #7. #7 to be ready and check off mannequin ready for pass. Pasing sequence 1-2-3-4-5-6....

2. Player to focus on pass completion to team mate then agility movement towards centre of area.

3. For example #1 will play the pass to #2. Then shimmey past the pole closest to him, dipping his shoulder. Complete the Agility hurdle/poles and then accelerate out of the area to his right, sharply changing direction around the outside mannequin to his left. So sprint to the right and check to the left.

**This is important as will allow numbers to flow between corners**

4. #2 will focus on their first touch, play to #3 and then focus on their agility movements.

**CP1**- Focus on the pass before your movement. Pass completion is very important.

**CP2**- Coach to demonstrate so players should be competent to play the pass and follow the agility pattern.

**CP3**- Players to show good awareness and time their movement patterns. Not to run across passing lane. Change of pace and direction is key.

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

1. SAQ/Agility at coaches discretion depending on level of group.

2. Change the passing square direction as well as movement. (run to mannequin to your left and check right)

3. Add in some more advanced passing patterns :

- Bounce passes, 1/2 around corner pole.

- Dribble around to next team mate and then start agility set at that pole. Add in some skill moves on your dribble.

- Advanced- Pass, bounce and then play a diagonal pass.

Review / Reflect (to be completed after each session)..
