Description

SESSION OBJECTIVES

To develop players’ ability to finish from low crosses effectively by:

  • Developing the players’ ability to deliver crosses
  • Giving them high repetitions in finishing from low crosses, so they learn to adapt to the ball being played into the box

FUNCTION:

  • This is a finishing practice with an emphasis on finishing from a low cross or a cutback.
  • Four mannequins are set up in a 10m x 10m square set up around 30m from goal, with one player starting at each.
  • Another two mannequins are placed wide, around the width of the 18-yard box. Each has a crossing player stationed next to it.
  • Four final mannequins are placed near the goal, in line with the posts: one pair at around the six-yard box, and the other pair slightly higher than the penalty spot.
  • Each wide area has two boxes: one starting in line with the wide mannequin, from which the players can put in low crosses; the second runs to the byline and is for the players to send in cutbacks.
  • The players should alternate their passing movements so that each wide player gets plenty of crossing and

cutback opportunities. The coach should also rotate the four central players so they all get equal finishing repetitions.

  • The coach can also vary the passing sequence, alter the positions of the mannequins, change the position of the crossing boxes or – if there are enough players – add defenders in place of the mannequins.

COACHING DETAIL: TECHNICAL

SHAPED CROSSES

  • Players should be encouraged to shape their crosses into space along the floor.
  • Being able curve the ball into an area that allows the finishing players to meet the ball without having to check their run is a positive.
  • Crosses should be played with good tempo because there are no defenders.

CUTBACKS

  • Players should attempt to cut the ball back with the right weight to allow for a first-time finish.
  • These crosses should not be played too softly, as this will lack the realism that is required to gain success later in the practice & games

MOVEMENT

  • Timing of the players’ movement is important.
  • Attackers should be set the challenge of meeting the ball on the move in the box. This will encourage them to time their moves and not get ahead of the ball to make the finish as comfortable as possible.

FINISHING

  • Players should be encouraged to place shots into the corner of the goals with accuracy over power. They should be able to use the pace of the balls being played in, to guide them into the corners.
  • Body shape is very important. Players should look to keep their body over the ball when finishing to prevent shots going over the bar.
