Description

Orientation for 9v9 where blues executing a high block preventing the reds from playing out from the GK through their defensive third. Blues line up in 1-2-3-3 formation against reds in a 1-4-3-1 formation. Start with reds trying to build up good possession from the GK with penetrating passes through midfielders or wide players

Method: 9v9 working with blues to execute high press from 1-2-3-3 formation (no FBs) against reds playing out from GK in 1-4-3-1 (No WAs) formation. Start with reds GK. Coaching the midfielders to work as a unit and with attacking unit to win ball back in opposition half

Coaching Points:

  • Good opposition build-up
  • Establish tight and compact shape with good starting positions 
  • Angle of strikers closing and communication to force opposition to one side of pitch
  • Midfield players prevent forward passing with timing of press, cover and balance
  • Individual body stance - low and side-on waiting for opportunity to win ball

Method: Learning and Implementation phase. Ball moves, all blue players adjust. Team, unit and individual pressing, covering and balancing. Midfielders establishing triggers to press as a unit.  

Coaching Points:

  • Identify triggers to press as unit
  • Distance between midfielders and attacking units
  • WA #7,11 can compact the shape when ball is on other side
  • Spare defenders ready to step forward if needed to press
  • Win the ball back as high up the pitch as possible
  • Transition to attack by moving the ball forward or retaining possession

Method: 9v9 with blues playing 1-2-4-2 (no FB's) against opposition reds playing 1-3-4-1 trying to play out through central areas in the midfield. Defending striker furthest from the ball drops in to close space on deeper lying central red. Opposition wide players start wide but looking for combinations in central areas 

Coaching Points:

  • Blue attackers drop deeper when ball not on their side
  • Opposition red attacker #9 and WM #7,11 create depth and width to allow space in central areas 
  • Red midfielders maintain angle of support and distance to receive the ball in central areas
  • Good communication from blues to maintain bring players in to central areas when needed 
  •

Method: Blues need to prevent opposition overload in the central shaded area to prevent opposition reds from building up possession with time and space. Furthest blue striker and wide midfielder need to step in to central area at times to apply pressure on the ball. Disrupt the triangle between opposition reds #6,8,10  

Coaching Points:

  • Maintain compact shape with limited space between units
  • Ball moves, defending team moves
  • Good communication between units
  • Central defenders maintain a high line to close space centrally
  • GK ready to react to ball over top
