PART 25 mins
**This session can be used for both Left and Right inside midfielders. All that is needed is to switch the activity from the left to the right side of the pitch.**
THEME: Delay, Depth and Cover, Balancing, compactness, Control and restraint.
MOMENT OF THE GAME: Opponents in possession
PHASE OF THE GAME: Defending
TOPIC: Defending in Zones 2 and 1
LEGEND:
C=coach, AC=Assistant coach, LF=Left flank, LC=Left central channel, RC=Right central channel, RF=Right flank, Z1=Zone 1, Z2=Zone 2
INSTRUCTIONS:Organization:
1/2 field is divided into zone 2 and 1, and uses the left flank and adjacent central channel. The touch lines are at the end lines of zone 1 and zone 2. There is one full size net at the zone 1 touch line. there are two small nets on the zone 2 touch line. One small net is at a 45 degree angle at the corner, and the other is on the touch line in the center of the inside left channel. The defensive team has 4 players in red, and 1 keeper (5 players at one time). The attacking team has 4 players in blue. There will be 2 groups of players, and 2 keepers, that rotate at the end of each sequence(18 all together). 1/5=Left inside mid, 2/6=right inside mid, 3/7=left outside mid, 4/8=left centreback, 9/10=keepers.
Goal:
Creating a situation where the left side defensive unit high presses the initial opposition attacker attempting to enter zone 1 from zone 2, with block defending in zone 2 and Defense against the quick attack in zone 1.
Conditions:
Play begins when an off field attacking player passes the ball to an on field attacking player in the zone 2 left central channel who attempts to dribble into zone 1. That player can also pass to teammates in that channel and zone. Play opens up to the entire area of play once the attackers gain zone 1, but they may only access zone 1 from zone two central channel via a dribble. There should be immediate pressure from the left inside mid, with support from the right inside mid, left outside mid, and left centreback. If the defense gains possession, they will need to play out to the left flank in zone 1 and can score in one of the two small nets once gaining zone 2. Play continues until a goal is scored, the ball goes out of play, or two minutes have passed.
Variables:
Adding 1 attacking player to create 5v5, then another to create 6v5, and finally a last attacker to create a 7v5 based on the success of the defensive unit.
KEY FACTORS:
Who is the primary player closing down in first contact? Who issecondarily covering, who is in tertiary support?
To which area should play be confined to?
Why do we want to organize to reinforce delay, and depth and cover?
when does the team move from block defending into defending quick attacks.
EQUIPMENT:
1 full size net, 2 small nets, 6 red cones, 2 corner flags, 2 large cones, 14 disc markers, 12 balls, 8 red pinnies, 8 blue pinnies, 1 green pinnie for the keeper.

WARMUP (15 Minutes):
Players will go through club pre-activity with captains leading(inthis case I would use the Foothills FC method).
Players will select two teammates to lead them through theFIFA11warm up.
Keepers use their own custom warm up after pre-activity.
ACTIVITYINSTRUCTIONS:
Organization:
18players broken into 2 groups of 9. Each group has 6 attackingplayers along the lines of a 20 foot equidistant hexagon, and 3defending players inside the play area.
Conditions:
Attacking players can pass left, right, or through the hexagon, but must stay on their assigned side. Any attacker on the outside canstart the sequence. The 3 defensive players in the hexagon attempt toutilize all the defending principles. As one defender delays, thenanother provides cover by anticipating the next pass, and the lastdefender provides support as needed. After the pass is made, thedefender closest to where the ball went becomes responsible fordelay, and the others move into cover and support positions.. If theball is intercepted by the defenders, or an errant pass is made, onedefender switches with the attacker who made the last pass andthesequence starts again. The coach will supervise one hexagon, andassistant coach will supervise the second.
Variations:
One attacker drops out, and becomes a sub, so that the attackerscan move in and out of empty side spaces.
