Finishing and Crossing Activity

Set up: 1 big goal and a grid appropriate for 3v1. A 3v1 is used so the players can get a shot off every round. Encourage the players to shoot near the top of the 18 yard box. If players are inside the 18 yard box, encourage them to place the ball in the corner.
After the shot is taken from the 3v1, a wide player dribbles toward the end line and side of the 18 yard box - they cross it to one of their players for a shot (pass) into goal.

Encourage the tempo to be high, but also make sure their actions are quality.

*adjust the number of defenders and the space based on your group.

Possession Rondo

Create a 35x35 grid and place 4 mini goals on each corner of the field (can create mini goals with cones if nets are not available)

Organize players positionally so they are thinking about their position and about their shape in the rondo.

Coach serves the ball to the grey team - service can be in the air, but if this is too difficult for the players to control, the coach can change their starting position and pass the ball to the grey players on the ground (see diagram).

Grey team must connect 10 passes before they are able to score on any of the mini goals.

If the defenders (blue team) win the ball, they can score on any mini goal, immediately.

The ball should always be served to the same team (grey) for the duration of the game. Play a 5 minute round, and then change direction and switch which team is receiving the ball.

Progression:

Make the games directional: after 10 passes grey can only score on the 2 mini goals at half, and when blue win it, they can only score on the 2 mini goals on top of the 18 yard box.

Final Game

Aim for 20 minutes of game play

9v8 game (make it game realistic when you are deciding shape)

Focus on the team building out of the back. Start with our shape: do we have options wide and high?

*Keep in mind, we don't want our backline the full width of the field. When the goalkeeper has the ball, our defenders should be a max of 15 yards away from the ball - the shorter passes we have building out of the back, the more secure we will be moving forward.

When the defenders receive the ball, there should be an option wide and in the middle.

Switch which direction teams are attacking.

Coaching Points

We want to encourage our players to try and ALWAYS be an option for a pass. Just because you do not have the ball, doesn't mean your job is done - arguably - it's the most important time to be active and find a space to receive the ball.

Player with the ball: Before you received it, did you scan to see a) where your teammates are b) who is available c) where you need to take your first touch in order to secure a pass d) if you are dribbling, can you get your head up to find a pass

Players WITHOUT THE ball: Can you move into a space where you can receive the ball? If you are being marked, how can you create space again? Prepare your body shape so when you receive the ball, you can go into the space that is open
