Defending with overloads. 3v2 inside the box and 5v3 outside box (15 mins)
Set Up: 2 small goals at the half way line . 2 teams 8v6 in favor of the attacking team.
Method: 8v6 attack v defense , objective for the defenders is to build out from the back with their first pass free and unopposed and to get the ball to a player on their team outside the box who will score in the small goals. Players inside the box are not permitted to leave .Objective for the attackers is to use the man advantage to score in the big goal. However, all goals must come from attacking players inside the box and attacking players outside the box are not permitted to shoot but only pass. First team to 5 wins.
Coaching Points: Can the defenders defend centrally and not be pulled away due to attackers having advantage.Verbal communication will be very important. Accurate passes from both teams and utilizing the spaces available and making quick decisions to find the forward options. Can attackers outside the box find overlaps.

8v6 small sided game (15 mins)
Set Up: 2 small goals at the half way line . 2 teams 8v6 in favor of the attacking team. Defenders set up in a 1-2-1-2. Attackers in a 1-3-3-1 (back 1 acts as a cb not gk)
Method: Similar to practice 2 of this session. But players have no restrictions to staying in certain areas of the pitch. Playing out from the back first pass is free and unopposed. Defending team are to score in small goals but a goal in these is worth 3. Attacking team to score in big goal is worth 1 goal.
Coaching Points: Remind defenders to be quick with their decisions on when to pass, dribble and shoot, encourage them to take chances on goals as they are worth 3. If attackers are too turn over can they stretch the pitch to create more space and pull defenders out of position down the flanks. Use of overlaps and midfield support with striker dropping deep as they have numerical advantage. Remind them to be patient and not force unavailable options.
