Main moment: BPO Key Principle: Deny opponents time and space to build up
What: Opponents were able to create overloads in the middle third in order to switch play to a vacant player on the other side behind our defence in defensive third and create goal scoring opportunities. We were too slow to close the space to prevent the switch and were caught in player-oriented marking rather ball-oriented marking.
Who: 7, 2, 10, 8, 5, 11
When: When our opponents were in controlled possession
Where: M3 and advancing into A3
Why: Our defenders initially sat too deep in a mid-low block and did not close down the space to the ball carrier quickly enough, allowing player to have time to make long pass. By creating overloads against our full-backs, our wingers dropped to focus on player-oriented marking allowing space and time for ball carrier
Session Objective: I aim to improve our ability to press higher up the field and close the space down quickly to deny our opponents ability to hit the ball over the top to the vacant side.
*At training we only have a 1/2 pitch to work on so focus has changed to initiating a higher press rather than mirroring the exact problem in the M3*

Positioning game
Pitch is divided into 3 sections. 3x teams of 5 + GK who support one of the teams. 2 teams in possession and 1 defending.
Rules
White and Black teams begin in possession. The aim is to transfer the ball from one end zone to the other. Possession team must make at least 2 passes before they transfer the play. Ball can be hit either along the ground or in the air. When the white team are in possession, they can use the middle grid to make the area bigger. Black team wait in their end zone. Blue team can commit 3 players into the end zone with 2 rest defenders in middle zone to block passing lanes. If white team gain possession they can attempt to score in the big goal or the 2 mini goals if at the other end. White team stay in defence for 3 minutes then rotate with another group. Possession team gain a point each time they successfully transfer the ball from one end to another.
Team task
Deny possession team opportunities to play through or over the defence
Player tasks
Generic: closest player to the ball closes the space on the ball carrier.
Generic: can you show them to the side when no support or to the middle if you have support
Coaches cues
As you see a ball carrier put his head up, can you close the space to prevent long pass
Middle zone defenders if you see ball carrier appear to hit a high ball, can you start to drop into final zone

Passing practice
Set-up 2 diamond shaped grids 7-8 players per grid depending on numbers at training (max 16)
Left-grid is pattern 1. Ball is simply played in a figure 8 pattern, and players follow their pass. However, on cone 2 after passing, the player must try to put pressure on player on cone 3 who is making a longer pass. Same for player on cone 5 passing to cone 6.
Right grid is pattern 2. This time ball is played in different pattern, however, players do not follow their pass but simply progress to the next cone eg from cone 1 to cone 2. After player at cone 3 lays off pass to cone 2, they look to put pressure on player on cone 4. Encourage to go as the ball is moving.
