Description

If you want a game to introduce passing and receiving in Week 9 then this is a great one to start with (Dominating Possession). It is challenging but that will motivate and engage the players to practice and improve their game understanding.

The second game builds upon this and increases the challenge (Dominating Possession 2) so a further chance to reinforce how important possession is for your team.

This week finishes with practice at having either a numerical advantage OR disadvantage (An Uneven Game) so another great one for game understanding and the decisions relating to this.

Dominating Possession

Organisation: This game is set up as shown and utilises 8 players. Please adjust the numbers and the area size to better meet the needs of your players, particularly if they have different ability levels. 25x15m is a good place to start.

How to play:

  • The game is 2v2 so the team in possession are always playing under pressure from an immediate opponent.
  • The idea is to keep transferring the ball from one end to the other as you find a pass into your teammate in each end zone.
  • This player is unopposed so they have time to think before they play the ball back in to continue the game.
  • The players in the middle also have to find space and shake off their opponent in order to receive the pass from their end player.

This game will give you the opportunity to visit all of the technical points related to finding space, passing and receiving such as:

  • the timing of your movement to receive
  • the quality of the pass you give your teammate
  • the disguise you must have in your movement and your passing
  • the receiving touch
  • your body shape to receive and play
  • the way you send messages and communicate with your teammate - plus a lot of other things too!

Dominating Possession (2)

Organisation: The game is set up as shown but try to mark out an area that challenges your players and gets the "challenge point" just right between success and failure. This area is 25x15m

How to play:

  • The game is 2v2 which is a great format to introduce combination play and having individual time on the ball to show your skills.
  • The team in possession controls the game so in the video you will see that the YELLOW team is in possession and the two YELLOW players occupy the end zones and the WHITE defenders screens any passes into this player.
  • If possession is lost (see video) then control of the end zones changes.
  • This game can be played using larger formats but 2v2 is great for the development of our young players.

An Uneven Game

This is a great game for attacking and defending.

Organisation: The area is appropriate for the age and stage of the players. The video shows playing in half a pitch but it could be 25x15m.

How to play:

  • The team of three YELLOWS start the practice and the aim is to keep possession until a pass can be played into the shaded scoring zone to a teammate running into it to score.
  • If the WHITE defending team gain possession they can score in either small goal.
  • If the GK saves a shot then they can launch a counter attack for the WHITE team.
  • If the YELLOWS shoot and miss then the GK restarts for the WHITE team.
  • There are no corners and players can self pass or dribble in instead of throw-ins.
  • The shaded scoring zone can be replaced with the offside rule where appropriate.
