Technical Activation (15 mins)

Objective: To prepare the players technically for the upcoming session.

Organization: 9 poles, 13 players (x2), 10 balls.

Conditions of exercise: Ball starts at the bottom pole, midfielder checks off the pole (away from where they are playing the ball), takes a touch and plays the ball between the 2 poles, into the path of the WB, who will beat the final pole with a touch and deliver a cross into the box. The midfielder makes a late run to the top of the box and the 2 strikers communicate to attack different spaces. WB's switch each repetition & CM's switch each go. When repetition is complete, white team do the same thing but on the other side.

Coaching points:

  • Open body shape (backing up) to receive the first pass and encouraging a quick transfer of bodyweight forwards to help with the positive touch & ability to step into the longer pass.
  • WB, timing of movement into the space and quality of first touch on the move, with a drop of the shoulder to replicate passively beating a defender.
  • WB, different types of crosses, whipped, cut back, driven.
  • Strikers communication and movement attacking different spaces and timing of the movement to attack the ball on staggered angles.

Functional (20 mins)

Objective: To isolate the opposition fb's in Zone 3 and get crosses into the box for 9/11/10/8 to score from in Zone 4.

Organization: 70Lx65W, 1-4-2-3-1 vs 1-3-5-2, 16 players, 10 balls.

Conditions of Play:

  •  Normal Soccer Rules apply.
  • Only the defending team's 2/3 and attacking teams 3/7 are allowed in wide areas to create 1v1's.
  • Attacking team can only score through playing into the wide channel before going to goal. If the wide player receives in the bottom zone and dribbles into the final wide zone, if a goal is scored from this then this goal is worth 3 points. If the ball is played into the final wide zone and the wing back receives and a goal is scored, that is worth 3 points. If the ball is played into the final zone (central) and a goal is scored, it is only worth 1 point.
  • No player can enter the final zone until the ball is played into it. Freedom of movement occurs once the ball is played into the end zone and there is 8 seconds to get a shot on goal before play restarts.
  • If white team are in possession, there objective is to play into the 9 in the end zone to score a point.
Restarts:
  • When the ball goes out of play or a goal is scored, restarts are from the coach playing the ball into the 6/8/10 and the game goes live on receiving.
  • Another restart can be the goalkeeper playing a goal kick into the deepest attacking midfielder and playing from there.
  • Ball played into the white team for the red team to counter press.
Coaching Points:
  • Attacking WB's creating separation and space between them and the defending FB's to beat them with receiving beyond
  • Creating space to receive and beat the opposing FB 1v1 (encouraging creativity and directness into the end zone)
  • Attacking WB's varying the ball into the box i.e. driven behind backline if space between GK and CB's or cut back for the late run if driven to the end line.
  • Ensuring players that attack the box (9/11/10/8) attack different spaces and time their movements based on the ball played into the WB i.e. delaying their run if the ball is played in the air and requires a touch before delivery.

  • If WB drops low to support build up and opposing FB steps in, strikers can split into the space above to create space to attack the wide area even if the primary option in the WB is low in support.
  • When the ball goes wide, encouraging timing of movement and having the top of the box, front post and back post attacked from players runs into the box.
  • Counter pressing quickly when transition in possession to either win the ball or force a negative pass.
