Moment of the game: We have just won the ball
Thought/Principle: Fastest Way Forward
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization
- Place 2 goals 10 yards apart horizontally and 20 yards apart vertically
- In between the goals create a vertical cone line that separates the goals and creates two 5 yard channels
- Place a cone 3 yards before each each goal
- Players have a ball each and are split in to 2 groups
- One group starts at the end where one goal is and the other team starts next to the other goal
Activity
- The exercise starts off with the first player in one of the lines driving down the channel and crossing in to the oppositions goal
- As soon as the player has struck the ball to cross it the fist player in the opposite line will drive out in to their channel and attempt to do the same at the opposite end
- The player who took the first shot will attempt to recover and stop the cross
- This will continue with each team attempting to get as many crosses in to their opponents net as possible
The objective for the players is to find the fastest way forward and have a positive end result. It's important that players understand a goal is much easier to score without and defenders and so we don't wait for them. Can we think about the technical aspects with the players, what sort of touches would they take? If the defender is able to recover is their a way of getting an end result using disguise? What are of the field would we be on for the exercise? Do they know any players who do this well?
Progression
- The players have to get past the crossing cone line before they can cross
- Add another option to cross to, if the defender blocks the cross across goal can we add a pull back option?
- Make sure players attack both sides left and right foot

Organization
- Place 2 goals 20 yards apart horizontally and 20 yards apart vertically
- In between the goals create a vertical cone line that separates the goals and creates two 10 yard channels
- Place a cone 3 yards before each each goal
- Players have a ball each and are split in to 2 groups
- One group starts at the end where one goal is and the other team starts next to the other goal
- Place a mannequin/pole halfway up the channel with an attacker stood behind it
Activity
- In lane 1 as the attacker drives at the player behind the mannequin will pull to the Inside
- The player with the ball will attack the defender, play a 1-2 with the support player and then cross in to the net
- In lane 2 as the attacker drives at mannequin the player behind the mannequin will pull to the outside
- The attacker will drive at the defender play the ball to the support player and then overlap, the support player will drive inside before rolling it to the overlapping player to cross
The objective for the players is to find the fastest way forward and have a positive end result. Adding a defender creates the opportunity for the combination. Again can we ask the players to think about the technical aspects? Body shape when receiving? Weight of pass? Technique on the cross?
Progression
- Add a passive defender who either goes with or does not go with the support player, attacker then has to make the decision to pass or drive in to the space
- Add Mannequins to beat with the crossSee the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization
- Use one half of the 7v7 field attacking one goal
- Place a full back 5 yards in field from the touchline at the halfway line
- Place a mannequin 5 yards in front and a winger 2 yards behind the mannequin
- One striker will start 5 yards from the edge of the area with a cone 3 yards either side of them
- One CM will start in line with the full back on the centre spot
Activity
- The session starts with the FB playing the ball off the rebounder and receiving it back
- This will trigger a movement from the winger either inside or outside
- If the winger moves outside the striker will come to the closest cone, if the winger moves in side the striker will move to the furthest cone
- The full back will draw the defender in and then play the pass to the winger
- If inside they will play a 1-2 around the defender and then get the cross in, if outside the FB will play the pass and overlap the winger who will return the ball for the FB to cross
- The striker will do 2 movements, the first will be the opposite of the winger and the 2nd will be to the opposite post e.g If the winger moves outside the striker will cone to the closest cone, then spin out to attack the ball at the back post.
- The CM will do the opposite to the striker to create two attackers in the area
The objective for the players is to find the fastest way forward and have a positive end result. With 1 defender and 2 wide players we are looking to combine (Quickest way forwards) and cross (End result) The focus here should be on wide play and the combination. What is the best receiving shape? what sort of pass are we looking for, what is the distance from the defender when we pass the ball? If we are overlapping can the player with the ball create the space for the overlap?
Progression
- Is there another way we can get in to the crossing position? Task the players with thinking about how else we can combine?
- Create a challenge for the players to score goals

Warm Up (10 mins)
Organization
- Each player gets a cone along one line on the field that are 2m apart
- Create 3 horizontal lines 5 yards apart moving forward from the start line
Activity
- The coach will run a series of races that all begin with different triggers
- The coach will come up with a trigger for different movements or distances e.g a clap of the hands is a straight race to the third line
- We are looking for different physical literacy skills, running forwards, backwards, skipping, etc
- We can also begin with different starting positions e.g. facing the wrong way, sat on the floor, a jump first etc
The objective for the players is to find the fastest way forward and have a positive end result. Although a simple warm up the idea would be that the players would have to recognize triggers and what those triggers mean. This relates to the game and doing things at speed while being able to read the triggers and what happens in a game when they see those triggers. How can we put this across to the players in a way that they understand?
Progression
- Add a ball and changes of direction
