Basics of a Back Four

The following information is designed to help with understanding the basics of defending as a back four using the principles of:
  • Pressure
  • Cover
  • Balance

This also relies on the execution of good individual defending technique and principles:

  • Angle and Speed of approach
  • Get low and side on
  • Anticipate an end point (the point at which you will initiate contact with the attacker)
  • Initiate Contact
  • Body before ball to win possession

Finally, success as a back four comes from using the above mentioned principles in conjunction with good communication to stay organized and win the ball back.

Cover

In this diagram the two closest defenders not pressuring the ball have gotten into covering positions. This means that they have gotten tighter together behind the pressuring defender. However, the right back is still not in the correct postion.

Balance

In this diagram the right back has also gotten tighter and closer to the other defenders. Notice how each of the 3 defenders not pressuring the ball are in line with each other. This is what is called balance.

This is a perfect picture of goof pressure, cover and balance.
