Defending 1v1 (15 mins)
Pitch size: 4 channels of 20 x 5 yards
Description: Defenders start with the ball. They pass the ball to the attacker, then play begins. The attacker must dribble past the defender to the end line, the defender must try to stop them. Once the ball is dribbled over the end line or the defender tackles, play stops and the attacker becomes the defender and vice versa.
Mechanics:1. Get in line
2. Pressure on the ball
3. Deceleration
4. Body position
5. Stay on toes
6. Be patient
7. Decision
8. Recovery run (movement)
9. Tracking players
Introduction of mechanics:
- Defenders must get up to the attacker as quick as possible, but then must put the brakes on and slow down on approach so they don't get beaten easily. They need to get touch tight if possible.
- Defenders body position should be side on, slightly crouched with bent knees, nice and low. They can then pivot on their back foot so they don't turn their back on their opponent
- Defenders should arc their run to one side and have their body position showing the attacker towards the space, this should force the attacker to go the way the defender wants and make it easier to tackle
- If the defender wins the ball, they can now go and dribble over the opposite end line and score themselves a point.
