Can look to have two groups, maybe 4v1 but then progress into a larger 7v3 to limit the options.

In possession, you need to find the spare player that isn't marked.

Players must try and make themselves the spare player.

Wave Game (Find the spare player) (20 mins)

The Wave game  (Drinks behind the goals)


  • Player (1) will run unopposed and shoot at the goal
  • As soon as that ball is dead, or saved, TWO players(2) from the reds run out with a ball making a 2v1 to the reds.
  • As soon as they have shot TWO players (3) will come from the whites and attack, making a 3v2 to the Whites.
  • As soon as they shoot TWO players (4) will come from the reds, making a 4 v 3 to the reds.
that's probably as far as we should take it, if anyone doesn't get involved, then the are at the front. So 4 balls required, but will want 8 as some will go flying and this is going to be rapid turnaround. Rotate the goalkeeper every game or a coach in goals.
Coaching points
  • It will be chaos to start, the boys will see this as a shooting drill, on another day, we can focus on that, but that's not what we are concentrating on today.
  • In every wave, there is a spare player.  You should be looking to make that count and get a reasonable shot away
We are looking for decision making, if the defenders don't close you down, then take the shotIf you are the spare man, make sure you are available and informing the one with the ball
