Training The Instinct - Warm-Up (10 mins)

Numerous technical exercises with emphasis on;

- forward passes

- forwards runs

- one touch passes

- awareness of space

Organisation:

1) 6-8 balls at the feet of players around the edge of the centre circle. Players with a ball take a touch and play a forward pass to a player without a ball and follow. Receiving player repeats.

2) Sixteen players positioned around the outside of the centre circle. One player starts with a ball, plays a pass to any other player and sprints after the pass. Receiving player plays a 1-2 with player to his left before playing his own pass.

3) Players in pairs around the edge of the centre circle with a ball between two. One player plays a pass from behind through the legs of their partner. The player in front sprints after the ball before dribbling behind another player around the edge of the centre circle and playing a ball through their legs for them to chase.

Timings:

Counter Attacking (15 mins)

Organisation

Two 24x14 grids set up either side of th halfway line. Teams are divided into two teams of seven players, one floating player and one Goalkeeper.

Six players from each team start the exercise in one grid as does the floating player. One player from easch team (target player) starts centrally, 20 yards from goal.

The red team starts with the ball and after three passes, they can play to their target player (A) and then go to goal. The target player in the other team becomes a defender. The floating player and one player from the red team can go and support their teammate and one player from the blue team can go and help defend, creating a 3v2 towards goal. When the attack finishes, the next ball will start with the blue team on Grid 2.

Key Points:

- look for players to create a yard of space and open their body up to hit the target player

- type of pass into outlet player. Pass into left shoulder of target forward so the supporting runners can get either side of him.

- pace of pass. Pace should allow runners to support and ensure target player doesnt have to come deep to get on the ball.

- supporting runs must be made as soon as entry pass is played

- can target player play off one touch it will make it harder for recovering defenders to stop the attack.

Progressions:

- increase pass requirement to 4/5 to challenge players ability in possession

- add a defender so attacker is initially outnumbered

- add a time limit for attacking team to get a shot off

- if the defensive team wins the ball in the grid, they can play out to the target player, adding a transition element to the practice.

Timings:

5x2 minute blocks
