Session Objectives:
Technical 1) In this session I aim to - improve players ability and confidence to play quick and accurate passes within 5-15m distances that allow their teammates to maintain possession effectively under pressure. Have a focus on the Mechanics of Passing: (Decide on target before receiving ball), if necessary correct position of ball in front of you, planted foot next to ball, lower center of gravity, lock ankle, choose surface of foot(technique), contact ball and follow through kicking action towards target.
2) Technical (Secondary) In this session I aim to - improve players ability to control the ball close to their feet or take a touch into space. Have a focus on the Mechanics of Control (first touch) On toes, eye on ball/identify space to take touch into, get in line (body) with ball, decide and present surface of foot or body towards the ball, relax on impact.
Tactical 1) In this session I aim to - improve players understanding of when to invite pressure into central areas to receive the ball centrally and create space in wide areas to play forwards and create chances on goal.

Description: Players are in groups of 4 with one ball per each group and one group will be pressing the groups with a ball in a 4v1 situation. 3 groups will pass the ball freely in their quadrant with a maximum of 3 touches allowed and the coach in the central are will then activate the pressing players after 15-30s to go and win the ball of the teams with a ball. If the pressing player successfully wins the ball from the team in possession they may go and support on of their teammates to win the ball in another quadrant until the ball have been one back in each area. Continue until each team has lost possession and then rotate the team that is pressing. (if teams still have possession allow play to continue for a max of 2mins before rotating to next pressing team).
Measurements: 20M x 20M space split into 4 quadrants, with a small 3M x 3M Rest Zone centrally.
Interventions: (2 Coaches available) - 1st Coach Observing from central area and can blow the whistle to freeze the group as a whole for quick intervention if there is a relevant coaching point but again try to avoid this and wait for the rest period (changeover) to provide 15-30s feedback to allow plays to maximise time on the ball. 2nd Coach roaming around the outside of the area to give individual player feedback at any time that is appropriate as 3v1 still allows for players to play effectively while not disrupting the exercise too much.

Tactical Can players start to recognise when to switch the play after inviting pressure into an area? Cam players shift the ball to shift the opposition and receive passes that allows them to take their first touch into space to advance the ball forwards and quicky towards goal? Can players be proactive and scan before receiving passes or as the ball is travelling to maintain possession more effectively. |
Description: Players are in 2 teams of 8. Team in Possession has two players per quadrant and is aiming to complete 10 passes for a point. Team in possession may keep the ball in their own quadrant to do so or play the ball into an adjacent quadrant to do so. The ball must start in two quadrants that are diagonal to each other and the pressing team can only have two players pressing to win the ball back at any time. A pressing player enters the quadrant to win the ball, but if the ball is played adjacent a new pressing player must react and enter from the central area, so they must be aware of when to press. If pressing players win the ball, they can score a point by shooting into the mini goal. (There cannot be two balls in one quadrant - if it occurs encourage players move the ball quickly into another space). Play for 3mins and then rotate roles so each team has possession twice.
Measurements: 20M x 20M space split into 4 quadrants, with a small 3M x 3M Rest Zone centrally.
Interventions: (2 Coaches available) - Coaches Observing from opposite sides of the exercise so each coach can see 2 quadrants each and help provide feedback on either side of the exercise as the ball is in play. If necessary, freeze the exercise for group intervention here to provide positional or tactical feedback on how and where to move the ball when under pressure as it is important for all players to hear this and they are playing for a longer period (still keep interventions quick). Provide individual feedback for technical aspects - one coach can give individual feeback at a time where necessary as there are enough attacking players to remain in an overload.
Progressions & Regressions:
Progressions
1) Start the exercise with a pressing player in each quadrant so players are challenged to play to adjacent quadrants faster.
2) Once possession team has played 10 passes, they can score in a mini goal to minus a point from the pressing team
3) Reduce the number of touches allowed
Regressions
1) Increase the number of touches allowed
2) Decrease the amount of pressing players
3) Minimise the number of passes to score a point

Description: Players are in 2 teams of 8 + GK. Half Pitch Game with some rules and modifications to encourage the session objectives. The pitch is set up into 4 quadrants and one central zone inside. Only one player from each team is allowed inside the central area at any time. Other players can only defend the central zone by blocking the passing lanes on the outside. 3 points for a goal that is scored after 3 passes are made in a quadrant and then played into the central zone and back out of it again. 2 points for a goal that is scored after the ball is played into the central zone and back out of it without any certain number of passes played in each quadrant. 1 point for a goal without any conditions applied. (If there is limited success can split into 2 pitches and play two separate games with less players (4v4 with GK each and coach on one end to oversee the practice)
Measurements: 75 x 40M space split into 4 quadrants, with a 10M x 10M Rest Zone centrally.
Interventions: (2 Coaches available) - 1st Coach Observing from central on a mannequin so they can observe how players are moving in the centre of the pitch and how they are receiving the ball to play out to a wide player 2nd Coach Observing from an area similar to that of a matchday to see how the teams structure is tactically as well as what they've incorporated technically from the sessions exercises. Coach on the inside of practice to roam when necessary to provide quick 15-30s feedback, when necessary, without stopping exercise. Coach on outside to bring players out for slightly longer feedback and to show player what they are seeing tactically 30-45s. Be aware avoid both coaches providing feedback individually at the same time unless there is a group intervention. Coaches can both see each other in practice with this set up.
Progressions/Modifications
1) Reduce number of touches
2) Must play the ball into 3 quadrants before scoring
3) Must play the ball centrally twice before scoring
Modifications
1) Remove Quadrants
2) Remove Central Area
3) Transition in into Game Training when there is enough success of desired actions

Passing Activation - 'Pass/Receive/Pass' (Work:Rest = 45s:15s) (10 mins)
Description: Players are in groups of 4 with two balls per each group. 3 players are at one corner of the marked area (quarter), and one stands in the opposite corner in front of a mannequin. Players with the ball play a pass to the 'working' player and the 'working' player must receive the ball and play a pass back to the player without a ball as quickly and accurately as they can. As soon as the 'working' player releases the ball the next pass must be played immediately to emphasize being on their toes and playing quickly. The player in front of the mannequin (working player) will work for 45s and then rotate with teammate until each player has worked for 45s each.
Measurements: 20M x 20M space split into 4 quadrants.
Interventions: (2 Coaches available) - 'On the fly' - do not stop the drill give feedback to players individually while floating around the exercise and/or remain loud and clear providing praise to individuals and the group WHILE they are doing the exercise (explain when you are talking you do not want them to stop unless you blow whistle) the aim of the exercise is to get players having lots of touches on the ball and raising heart rate/intensity so they are sharp in rondos and small sided games.
