Key Factors

  • FAW Principle - Understanding when and how to combine, create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch

Organisation

  • Pitch area (yards) 35 x 25
  • 1 GK and 2v2 in each half of the pitch
  • 2 common players on the outsides can work the length of the pitch

Setup

  • Red team GK starts with the ball. Plays to red in that half and aim is to complete 5 passes in a 5v2 overload using the common players.
  • Once the 3 passes are complete they pass into the reds in the other half or to the common player who can drive in to create a 3v2 in the final third and get a shot off. If the blue team win the ball in either phase they have 5 seconds to get their shot off and score.
  • Coaching focus on the red team using the FAW principle however an objective has been set for the blue team when they win it to maintain their engagement in the practice.
  • An element of the defensive principles will also be used here to maintain realism despite the focus being on attacking in the final third
Progression
  • Limit the touches to encourage quicker passing
  • Change the number of passes use of extra players going into the final third for overload
  • 5 second limit to score once in oppositions half

Challenges

  • Red team
    • Goal for scoring in the goal
    • 2 Goals for a first time finish in shaded area
    • 2 Goals if you score from a common players cross
  • Blue Team
    • Goal for scoring in the goal
    • Goal for winning the ball back
    • Target - Leave the furthest man and condense the half pitch
Objectives
  • Social
    • Communication, team work, desire to a common goal, patience
  • Physical
    • Sprints, transitional running
  • Tactical
    • Move the ball quickly to switch play, combinations, positioning in and out of possession, playing forward
  • Psychological
    • Good decisions, remain focused when multiple goals may be scored against you, work together
  • Technical
    • Good sharp crisp passing, weight of pass, one touch finishing, timing of runs
