Session Plan – Confidence in Front of Goal
Aims of the Session
Develop composure and self-belief in front of goal under various pressures.
Improve timing, movement, and decision-making in attacking situations.
Encourage creative passing and through-ball play to forwards.
Increase repeated opportunities to score to reinforce confidence.
Translate technical finishing skills into game-realistic scenarios.
Objectives
By the end of the session, players should be able to:
Execute accurate shots under unopposed and lightly opposed conditions.
Time forward runs effectively into scoring zones.
Play weighted through balls to forwards with composure.
Demonstrate positive body language and assertiveness in goal-scoring opportunities.
Maintain possession in a 3-zone structure while creating scoring chances.
Make confident decisions in small-sided game situations, applying learned principles.
Organisation
Players: 12–14 (adjustable depending on numbers)
Pitch: Standard 7v7 SSG area, divided into 3 zones:
Middle zone: possession and build-up (~20–25 yards)
End zones / grey zones: scoring areas with goalkeepers
Equipment:
Balls (at least 4–5)
Cones to mark zones
Goals (mini or full size depending on age/level)
Bibs for teams
Session Duration: 60 minutes
Staffing: 3 coaches to supervise, give feedback, and encourage positive reinforcement.
*Technical Practice is where the group divides into 2. Attackers and defenders. Phase one will only have 5/6 players. This gives an oppurtunity to identify confidence levels in each individual.*

Skill Session: Confidence in Front of Goal (Possession-Based, 3-Zone)
Duration: 20 minutes
Objective: Develop composure, timing, and confidence in front of goal under progressive pressure.
Setup:
Zones: Middle zone: possession (~20–25 yards) End zones: finishing zones with goalkeepers
Players: 6–8 in possession, 1–2 forwards in each end zone
Rules:
Phase 1 – Unopposed Forward Runs (8 minutes)
Middle zone keeps possession, forwards time their runs into end zones
Through ball played by teammate, forward takes shot without defensive pressure
Key Focus: timing of runs, accuracy of passes, composure in front of goal
Variation: alternate shots with weaker foot, change angles of runs
Coaching Points:
Phase 2 – Single Defender Progression (7 minutes)
Introduce one defender in the end zone
Defender can follow the forward but cannot leave the zone
Forward must adjust decision-making and shot selection under light pressure
Key Focus:
Timing and angle of runs
Quick decision-making
Composure and confidence when finishing under pressure

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Phase 3 – Small-Sided Game (SSG) 7v7 – Free Play with Zones
Duration: 15–20 minutes
Objective: Transfer confidence, timing, and composure to a realistic game environment while encouraging creative forward play.
1. Setup
Field: Same 3-zone setup from earlier
Middle zone: possession and build-up
Grey zones / end zones: scoring areas only
Teams: 7v7 (or adjusted to numbers available)
Rules:
Players can move freely in any zone
Goals can only be scored in grey zones
Bonus: a through ball to a forward that leads to a goal = double points
2. Coaching Points – Focus on Confidence
Encourage attempts: Praise every shot taken in the grey zones, even if off-target.
Positive reinforcement: Celebrate creative passes, timing of runs, and risk-taking.
Decision-making: Emphasize recognizing moments to shoot vs. pass—confidence grows with smart choices.
Through-ball emphasis: Reward risk-taking with the double-point system to reinforce belief in forward play.
Body language: Encourage upright, assertive posture before and during shooting—confidence is visible.
Repetition under realistic pressure: The game environment allows multiple scoring opportunities without overemphasis on success/failure.
3. Optional Variations / Progressions
Time-limited challenges: e.g., 2 minutes to score as many as possible in grey zones, which encourages composure under time pressure.
Rotation of forwards: Everyone experiences being the target player in the grey zone, building confidence in different roles.
Goalkeeper challenge: Encourage goalkeepers to give away “easy” saves at first, then gradually increase difficulty to build shooting self-belief.
4. Reflection / Cool Down (3–5 minutes)
Gather players in a circle and ask:
“Which shot or run made you feel most confident today?”
“What creative play helped you get closer to scoring?”
Reinforce:
Confidence comes from trying, practicing, and positive risk-taking
Scoring is important, but consistent effort and composure are the real goals
Summary / Emphasis for the Whole Session
All phases (unopposed, single defender, SSG) are designed to give repeated scoring opportunities
Players experience success and failure in a safe environment
Progression from unopposed → light pressure → game-realistic SSG
Key theme: confidence comes from repetition, positive reinforcement, and composure under pressure

Technical
Technical Practice (15 mins) – Confidence-Focused
Objective:
Create as many chances at goal as possible.
Build confidence with shooting in the 18-yard box without hesitation.
Encourage players to trust their decision-making and execution under pressure.
Session Layout (Modified for Confidence)
Setup: Same as your original 4-shot rotation. Manniquins and goal zones remain.
Confidence-Building Modifications:
Positive Reinforcement on Every Attempt:
Award points for every shot attempted, regardless of outcome.
Highlight good decisions (timing, movement, shot selection) even if the shot misses.
Use phrases like: “Great decision to take it early!” or “Good movement, now aim wide!”
Small, Achievable Targets:
Set incremental goals for each rotation (e.g., “Hit 2 different zones this round” rather than “score all 4”).
This creates a sense of early success and builds confidence before the bigger challenge.
Peer Encouragement Element:
After each rotation, players give one positive observation about a teammate’s execution.
Creates supportive environment and reinforces confidence through peer feedback.
Shots (With Confidence Focus)
Shot 1 – 1v1 vs mannequin
Encourage players to “commit to the move” without hesitation.
Reward creativity: allow any dribble moves even if they fail.
Point system: 1 for center, 2 for wide, +1 if the move beats the mannequin cleanly.
Shot 2 – Right side first-time finish
Encourage players to take the shot without overthinking.
Confidence cue: “If you see the shot, shoot!”
Optional: allow a second attempt if first shot is blocked, reinforcing persistence.
Shot 3 – Left side first-time finish
Same as Shot 2.
Encourage body positioning and anticipation rather than perfection.
Shot 4 – Through ball read and run
Add encouragement: “Trust your run and timing; don’t wait for perfection.”
Optional progression: lightly encourage the first defender to “shadow” rather than tackle, letting the attacker experience success under mild pressure.
Scoring & Rewards (Confidence-Oriented)
Points for all attempts, not just accurate ones.
Bonus points for:
Attempting early shots
Hitting wide zones
Good decision-making
Leaderboard is optional; if used, focus on personal improvement (e.g., “More shots on target than last rotation”) rather than just competition.
Progressions (Confidence-Focused)
Mild Pressure: Players 2 + 3 sprint to apply pressure. Keep them non-tackling at first.
Defender Pressure: Replace mannequins with players who can block or shadow but not tackle. Encourage attacking player to attempt anyway—reward effort and movement even if blocked.
Add Goalkeeper
Regressions
Remove mannequins in goal.
Allow shots closer to goal to build early success.
Allow players to take two attempts per shot to encourage risk-taking without fear of failure.
Key Coach Cues to Build Confidence
“Shoot early, don’t hesitate.”
“Make the move, mistakes are part of learning.”
“Good movement creates chances—let’s see it again.”
