Warm Up

Duration - 16 minutes

Area Needed - 40m x 30m

Objective - to prepare the players for a technical attacking session using relevant footballing actions and dynamic stretching

  • Station 2 - player works through foot work ladder (action called by coach), player then continues through outer cone to join next station
  • Station 3 - player jumps 2 hurdles, then receives from coach and plays return (action called by coach - volley/head/floor pass)
  • Station 4 - player takes ball and plays rebound passes against the 2 rebound boxes (left foot, right foot), player continues on through outer cone and dribbles back to starting station

Wide attacking 9 v 8 (25 mins)

Drill - Wide attacking play with transitions to defend

Duration - 25 minutes

Area Needed - Full width of pitch, length from goal line to just inside opposite half

Objective - To build attacks through wide areas of the pitch using key players, with transitions to defend

Method:

Game set up is 9 v 8 in favour of the attacking team (BLUE)

Blue team formation: 1-3-2-3

Red team formation: 1-4-2-1

Blue Team play out from the goalkeeper to the CB to establish controlled possession - CB varies movement to either side of the box to receive pass and dictate point of attack

Diagram shows movements when attack being built on left side of pitch

Orientation:

Key players used in key positions

Blue Team - GK, CB, 2 x FB, 2 x CM, 2 x Wingers, 1 x CF

Red Team - GK, 2 x CB, 2 x FB, 2 x CM, 1 x CF

Red Team to provide realistic problems for Blue Team - line of engagement/press/low block etc

Coaching Points:

  • GK and CB establish controlled possession and start wide attacks by playing to either full back
  • Full back and winger look to link up and create overloads up attacking flank
  • Winger on opposite side supports centrally by becoming a second centre forward
  • Midfielders vary runs depending on point of attack - one stays deeper and joins in with build up, the other penetrates final third with runs from deep
  • Transition to defend using recovery runs when possession is lost

9 v 9 match - focus on wide attacks (20 mins)

Game: 9 v 9 match with focus on building wide attacks

Duration: 20 minutes

Area Needed: Full width of pitch, length is from goal line to just over halfway line

Objective: To build attacks in wide areas, with transitions to defend

Method:

  • 9 v 9 match
  • 1-3-2-3 vs 1-3-2-3
  • Both teams look to work ball to full backs to start wide attacks
  • Transition to defence when possession is lost

Coaching Points:

  • Establish controlled possession to set point of attacks
  • Full backs and Wingers link up using overlaps/underlaps to penetrate final third
  • Opposite flanks support centrally by adjusting position based on point of attack
  • Transition runs to close gaps between units when possession is lost

Cool Down: Duration - 10 minutes

Session Review:
  • Did the goalkeeper and CB establish controlled possession to start attacks?
  • Did we create overloads in wide areas using full backs supporting wingers?
  • Did wingers become second strikers if attacks went up opposite flank?
  • Did we become more confident is trying to build wide attacks?
