Arrival Activity (15 mins)

Lanes 1v1 defending - players play a 1v1 within a lane with the objective of getting to the opposite side. If the ball leaves the lane, the ball goes to the player who did not touch the ball last. Play is restarted by dribbling back into the lane at the point the ball left lane.

Progressions:

If you win the ball in the lane and counter-attack you get double points.

Panna's are worth double.

Coaching points:

Pressing - 4S's Sprint to "shut down" or close down opponent.

Slow down to within broken arm's distance/ touch tight.

"Sit down"; feet in opposition, on toes, in a squat body shape so the body is poised to react to a poor touch, by stealing, nicking away or tackling (poke with front foot or back side foot).

Show Down; Body facing the opponent with 1 foot forward and 1 foot back to protect against "panna" and show towards touchline or opponent's end-zone.

Slow down attacker by staying goal side and in a jockeying position (sit down, DELAY).

Stay on toes, avoid going to ground, being square or flat footed (control & restraint).

Lead in (15 mins)

1v1 defending with goal and goalkeeper repetition circuit - Coach feeds ball to the defender who feeds the attacker to begin the practise and must look to win the ball, deny or deflect a goal scoring opportunity. Alternate the defenders every 1 or 2 attacks, alternate defenders so other players have an opportunity to defend. If the defender wins the ball, they look to play back into the coach.

Progression: 2v1, 3v2.

Picture 1: Can we deflect the ball away with patient jockeying in 1v1 situations.

Picture 2: Can we win the ball with patient jockeying, after a bad touch and get the ball to a team mate in 1v1 situations.

Picture 3: As a last resort can we look to block any shots by lunging toward the flight of the ball in 1v1 situations.

Coaching points: 4S's (press)- Stay in jockey position and on toes, be patient and wait for attacker to make the move.

 - Be proactive, watch their movement to see which way they are going or be ready to take ball on a bad touch.

- If attacker has created space for a shot push off back foot and lunge towards flight of the ball to block shoot, with front leg.

Function 2 box game (15 mins)

1-4-1-2-3 (out of possession) vs 1-4-4-2 (in possession)

Create 2 adjacent penalty boxes which are next to each other using 2 teams with 1 team (focal team) ideally outnumbered e.g. 6 v7 as illiustrated. The attacking team's goalkeeper starts play and rolls the ball out to a team mate and play goes live. When the ball leaves the playing area, the coach gives the goalkeeper another ball. Play continues until the ball leaves the play area or a goal is scored. No offsides.

Primary player: Centre backs (5 & 6)

Primary unit: 5 & 6 and goalkeeper (1)

Secondary unit: Defensive midfielder (4), Fullbacks (2&3) and centre midfield (8, if available number).

Opposition management: Shoot on sight, take minimal touches, move the ball and create for others, work the defence, attack rebounds.

Picture 4: back four in space between 6 yard box and penalty spot (second six yard box) with quarter body shape, ready to react to crosses or engage attackers in the box, with midfield protection and step up in relation to the ball.

Picture 5: If a shot has been taken, nearest player to the goalkeeper anticipate the rebound and look to hook away.

Progressions/ adaptations:

- Make continuous - if the ball leaves the play area, have corners and throw ins.

- Allow offsides

- Reduce width to increase goal engagements for defending team.

- Encourage attackers to move ball with minimal touches (go 2 or 3 touch).

Coaching points:

- get good contact on the ball with side foot to get high and wide away ideally with same foot same side.

- Look to hook away high and wide if facing own goal and dealing with rebounds, if necessary go to ground and swipe with leg nearest to middle of goal.

- Goalkeeper looks to parry using palms, low towards touchline away from danger, or finger tip around post for corner.

Phase of play (20 mins)

Extend the pitch to a length of 45 yards and continue the practise, cutting out the corners to give more realism in terms of space but also the repetition and relevance. Continue to give an overload to the attacking team and them a chance to counter-attack. If the defending team fail to score after two counter-attacks, the play restarts with the goalkeeper. Offsides are allowed.

Opposition management: Encourage attack to get the ball into the box as quickly as possible, with fewer touches as possible, make defenders defend.

Progressions/ adaptations:

Make continuous - if the ball leaves the play area, have corners and throw ins.

- Reduce length to increase goal engagements

Coaching points/ pictures.

Delay: Press player on the ball to engage them, with 4s,approach with curved, showing them away from central areas, slow down attacks, restricting passing lanes and to allow team mates to recover.

Encourage defending team to get goal side/ ballside and try to recover organisation.

Reaffirm previous coaching points & pictures.
